Cars pay some, lorries pay a lot. And many cars pay no car tax at all. AAMOF, no cars pay road tax. Have you become a cyclist or contracted OCD? It's road tax, everybody calls it that. It's a tax vehicles pay to use the road. No vehicles pay tax of any sort. Tax is anything given to the government. Council tax, VAT, income tax, road tax, etc, etc. No vehicles give, donate or pay any tax. This is not controversial. Then what is the £200 a year I pay for my Renault? I am glad to be able to advise you that Car Tax (the successor to Purchase Tax, and insituted in 1973 because the Treasury could not bear to lose the greater proceeds of that tax wheb PT was otherwise replaced by VAT) was abolished in the early 1990s (under John Major). Motor cars are now subject "only" to VAT on purchase as new vehicles. Commercial vehicles are subject to VAT when sold new and when sold secondhand. Happy to help. |

Or conversely, if it is a Road Tax, why is it not charged to every user of the road irrespective of how, why or when they use the road? I asked first. Do you have an answer? Why is Road Tax not charged on vehicles which are neither kept nor used on the road, when it would be charged if they were used or kept on the road? It's an easy question to answer, but you dare not answer it. |

There is also a first year premium to be paid in addition to road tax, presumably to try and discourage sales, or just gouge the cash cow motorist even further. |
