Default car vs bike commuting on 'the car show'

$70,000?!? That's a hellaciously high petrol bill! Oh, yeah, forgot
about car parking - never mind. (It's, what, twenty bucks a day in the
CBD?)

The $70,000 figure included the purchase price of the car

What was the cost for public transport once they factored in the purchase
price of the train?

Never mind the train, factor in the cost of the tracks and the ground they
sit on. Trains are cheap!(by comparison).

"...but I'd take the Audi every time."

Well, you're a f'kn idiot then.

Couldn't quite tell. Was the bike a single
speed or did it have hub gears?

And there was I wondering what ever happened to the proposed race with
GPLama. Nice work Lama, but since when did you ride a $600 bike??

That's all that it is worth... oh it was a single speed running 39/15
gear (around 70GI)....

I won't mention that it was a 'made for TV' mock up and I drove from
Mordi to the city.. it'd ruin all the fun wouldn't it?

*snort* I'll be starting a new job in Southbank in about a month.
There's only two transport methods that have so much as a glimmer of
hope of happening, and the one that averaged out at $70,000 is *not* one
of them.

You get to salary sacrifice a helicopter?

jealous

So the pilot; she is cute?

Flicking through the tv on the weekend i watched a segment of the show
imaginatively titled 'The Car Show'. They were comparing commuting in
Melbourne by car, train and bike. I missed the beginning but assume
they all left the same point at the same time. The guy on the train
arrived at the destination first, followed by the bike rider ten
minutes later. The car came in much later. When they compared the
costs the bike was averaged out at about $1000 a year including
purchase price and muesli bars. The car was averaged out at $70,000+ a
year not including servicing or speeding tickets. No mention of the
other benefits of cycling ie. fitness, less pollution etc. The
