Default Educational encounter

I made a short run to a pharmacy today, riding on the residential
collector road that used to be my commute route to work before I
retired. Traffic was light and the new single-lane roundabout worked well.

A few blocks onward I signaled my right turn. A large old van was coming
up behind me. He honked once and I waved briefly.

Then just before I got to my intersection, he pulled alongside me and
blared his horn a couple times. I gave a "what the heck??" hand signal
and looked over at him. He was yelling something and waving me to the right.

Just before I turned right, he turned left into the same cross street. I
decided to follow him into that small neighborhood with a maze of
residential streets. I saw him turn right and go out of sight, but I
knew he had to go left at the next intersection.

Soon I saw the van parked in the middle of a quiet street. The driver
was in conversation with a guy sitting on his riding mower on a lawn to
our left. I came up between them and said "Excuse me!"

"What do you want?" asked the driver.

"Ohio Revised Code 4511.55. Have you read it? It's on the internet."

"What's it about?"

"A bicycle is legally a vehicle. I've got full rights to the road..."

I would have said more - about legal permission to take the lane when
it's too narrow to safely share, but he interrupted me.

"Oh, I didn't know that. I apologize, sir."

I said "OK" and rode off. The guy on the mower just sat there, sort of
bug-eyed over the encounter.

Nope.

I do have a friend who was pulled over at something like 6 AM. He was on
his way to work, cranking on a nice downhill where the speed limit was
25 mph. The cruiser came up behind him with flashing lights.

The cop asked him "Do you know how fast you were going?" My friend said
"No."

The cop said "You were doing 34. I just thought you might like to know.
Have a good ride."
