College Bike Options
Apropos of Joerg's stories of his on-campus beaters with welded cottered cranks, savvy students in modern times should consider the campus surplus store. I was over at the University of Utah surplus "store" (a small, three story warehouse), and they had dozens of bikes in the $50-75 range, including a couple almost new Trek FXs. It's amazing what kids will leave behind. There was tons of junk, but a surprising number of not-bad bikes.

Maybe times have changed. 25 years ago there was no such thing as a college store at my college. It was a large state university like Utah. We did have a college sponsored book, clothing, etc. store inside the student union. New stuff. But no furniture, bicycle, electronics, junk store.

It's a surplus disposal center that also handles abandoned items. http://fbs.admin.utah.edu/surplus/ There are a lot of government agencies in the business of selling surplus.https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm -- Jay Beattie. |

Upon graduation dad buys them a shiny new Mercedes-Benz which has a ton more appeal to them than the trusty old Trek. Plus a credit card or big check. Afterwards they buy themselves the matching attache briefcase, some nice suits, silk shirts, ties, tassel shoes and whatnot. Then they dump their bikes and all the other stuff and never look back. Meaning they also typically don't ride much anymore. I got my bikes via a huge peg board in the hallway of the largest cantina of my university. Luckily that came without an obligation to eat there. No Treks back then, it was all department store road bikes which lasted about a year each. -- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com/ |

You don't expect me to be dragging some tattered old four year old bicycle around, do you? -- cheers, John B. |
