Ultegra vs. Dura-Ace?
"Mike Jacoubowsky" wrote in message om... My criticism of the Ultegra group is the front shifter - no trim setting for the big ring. It really needs one, especially with that flexy hollow crank. I think the latest ones have it, but I'm not sure. Mine doesn't. I'm lucky -- I can adjust the rubbing out of my drivetrain. But not everyone can, depending on their bike. This is definately a nit worth picking. Ultegra still doesn't trim the largest chainring on a triple, but I haven't found that to be a problem (you're generally not riding in the large/large combo, and maybe it's even a good thing that you'll get a bit of noise if you do!). --Mike-- Chain Reaction Bicycles http://www.ChainReactionBicycles.com I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but you can use the DA triple shifter with the Ultegra front der. & Ultegra crankset -- and then you will get the trim on the big chainring. This setup works as well as, or better than, using the Ultegra front shifter. It's the setup I had until I switched to using a double. Now I have a front shifter that has infinite trim (also known as 'friction') -- and I can switch from double to triple cranks without swapping shifters too. Incidentally, having ridden on 52-42-30 for the last 2 years, I find the drop from 53 to 39 to be *huge*. Still getting used to that. Seems like simul-shifting front and rear is the only way to hold a steady cadence. --Jens |

Ultegra vs. Dura-Ace?
Somebody asserted about Dura-Ace triples:
Even with the funky triplizer setup and the ba**ard granny ring BCD, the ability to run a 39/53 really works well for me. I replied: That's an option with Ultegra too. We sell a lot of TA 38 tooth middle rings. A shy person asked: How well do they shift with the Ultegra derailleur that's designed for a 10t middle-outer chainring difference? Fine, generally, though some folks also sub out a smaller big ring. Or do you need a DA derailleur, and thence DA shifters? I suspect a Dura-Ace derailer would work better. I don't see why you would need Dura-Ace shifters though. Sheldon "Let's Not Make It Seem Harder Than It Is" Brown +---------------------------------------------+ | Television: | | A medium. Ultegra vs. Dura-Ace?
Emily- I was checking out roadbikereview.com reviews of Campy Chorus, and
someone mentioned that Campy is not compatible with as many wheelsets as Shimano. BRBR Geeezzz, the internet. Campagnolo 9 or 10s is compatible with a shimano 9 and 10s wheel... emily- My top two choices at present are Bontrager Race Lites and Mavic Kysirium Elites BRBR 650c?? Didn't know they made 650c in ksyriums... BRBR If that hollow aluminum crank arm was a-flexin', it would be a-breakin' It isn't the crank that's 'flexing'... A note, cannot use a DA front der with an ultegra crank....cage hits the middle ring when in the largest ring unless it is mounted way high.... This has nothing to do with the Ultegra _crank_. The proplem is with the use of the stock 42 tooth middle chainring. We were discussing replacing this with a 38 tooth TA, which would make this a non-issue. I would expect the Dura-Ace front derailer to work a bit better than the Ultegra with this setup. They really like the Ksyrium Elites... Thank for the information! Emily -- -------------------------- Posted via cyclingforums.com http://www.cyclingforums.com |
