Default Cable lock your only option with this rack?

Hey, a local business put in not one, but TWO dedicated bike parking
areas! One with security cam--cool or what. However, the racks, cool
in the sense that they hold the bikes, look like a PITA to lock to--
waddaya think? A cable the only option if ya wanna sammie?

It looks to me like you can insert either wheel in the rack and secure it
with a U-lock. If you put your rear wheel in the rack, remove the front
wheel and place it beside the rear wheel, can't you then hold everything
with a U-lock? If you don't want to R & R the front wheel, then I guess a
cable is the only solution.

Either a cable or a Kryptonite NY "fuggetaboutit" Lock

Either of those might work. Security cam is a GREAT idea!!!!

If you put the front wheel in the thingie facing the
correct way (up-jutting part toward rear of bike),
you should be able to put a U-lock around the upper
end of the rack, the front wheel, and downtube.

Not with fenders it won't work. I'm just gonna have to use a cable if
I get a sammie. I mean--they got a freakin' security cam on the one by
the door--that's pretty kick ass! Especially for this town! What's
funny is that the best bike rack in the neighborhood is at the Wally
World neighborhood market--which also has the best rye bread, produce,
hot wings, and Latin foods section of all the 7-8 big groceries in
this part of the city. But--you have to ride home by the SEIU
headquarters if ya shop there, or take a 2 mile long-cut of shame!

I've locked both Road & Mt. bikes to this type of rack successfully
many times. Plus other kinds of odd racks w/ U locks.
I use one of my 4X9"or 5X9" Krypto U type Mt. Bike locks. Put the bike
between two of the racks upright "U's" w/ the seat post @ about one
end (top) of one of the the stationary U. Remove the front wheel &
work w/ the pedal position to allow you to secure the lock. You will
discover that some positionings work better that others. I do not
believe in cables unless as a supplement w/ an additional lock locking
the cable. I'm fairly certain that you can lock to that rack w/ one of
the better Krypto locks. The smaller the better. But it has to large
enough to reach the rack through 2 tires & frame.

Good luck

Assuming you use the wheel slot for a wheel, then you could use a
cable, armored cable, chain, articulated link, or a long-shackle U-
lock.

With the front wheel plopped in the rack the "wrong" way, you should
be able to pick up front wheel, rack loop, and downtube with a long
shackle.

By positioning the bike's BB alongside the peak of one of the wheel
loops, you could probably lock the frame to the rack with an ordinary
U-lock.

I rarely leave my bike outside. I shop at several grocery stores, and I
bring my bike inside all of them. Not in the vestibule, but in the store
itself. My shopping trips don't take very long. That area of a store is
always on security camera.

Put your bike on the side of the rack next to the upright U bracket on
the end of the rack.

I tried that at the local Krogers when I was out on the fix with just
a messenger bag running ultra light--the rentabutchcop threatened to
call downtown and have me spend the night in jail--just for bringing
the bike in the doorway. I got her canned from that part time gig.
Still couldn't bring the bike in. Sigh.

Best place to lock is often the cart catchers--but you risk some
dooshbag ramming your rig.

Target and Wally World are the two mass market retailers in this big
city that actually have real secure racks.
