Safety inflation
So now, in addition to helmets, high-viz clothing, disc brakes and
blinding daytime running lights, we need... https://www.forbes.com/sites/larryol.../#12d4de76bb4a RADAR! Anything less is just not safe any more. Danger! Danger! (Where did those six-feet-tall flippy flags from the 1970s go?) -- - Frank Krygowski |

It's a deep state conspiracy to scare all cyclists off the road and put us all safely in our basements on Zwift, where we belong. |

Oh, there's been a big uptick in the populist "bikes don't belong" brigade in the past couple of years hereabouts. Some of that is due to some high profile fatal bike-car collisions (three that I can think of offhand, two of which apparently involved the cyclist running a red light or stop sign and the other a hit-and-run drunk driver). Some of it is due to several thoroughfares getting badly designed bike lanes that also resulted in homeowners and businesses losing onstreet parking and/or the loss of a lane of traffic, resulting in backups many blocks long while drivers have plenty of time to contemplate the empty bike lanes (we have a Minneapolis Bike Coalition and a St. Paul Bike Coalition that have sprung into existence to push for these in the past few years, neither of which seem to have the foggiest notion of competent bike lane design). My favorite compliaints are the grousing based on the canard of "bikes don't pay taxes" and that we are therefore getting to use the roads for free. I wonder where all that money I send to the government goes, if I'm not paying my fair share of taxes. |

Whaddya mean?? "Any bike facility is a good bike facility!" Isn't that the modern motto? And if it is pretty obviously crap, they fall back on "Well at least they're doing _something_ for us." http://wcc.crankfoot.xyz/facility-of...h/July2004.htm -- - Frank Krygowski |

THAT's the current motto. -- - Frank Krygowski |

The article promotes a parade of consumer items from helmets to disc brakes to DRLs to radar -- and of course, a Garmin unit to tie it all together. The whole thing smells like an infomercial. The opening photo is of a bike accident in Toronto, presumably one that could have been prevented by radar. I searched the picture and got this story: https://www.cp24.com/news/cyclist-st...ital-1.3729720 The rider somehow “'came off' his bike and came into contact with a truck travelling in the same direction." So, he fell off his bike in front of a truck? I don't need radar to tell me not to do that. Could you imagine riding with radar in dense downtown traffic? Ridiculous. I think not riding with headphones would produce ten-times the safety benefit. -- Jay Beattie. -- Jay Beattie. |

I am guessing the biker came off his bike because the truck travelling in the same direction hit him from behind. In the two bike-car accidents I have been involved in, I came off the bike after the car hit me. Its a common occurrence. Maybe just random that he fell in front of the truck. He could have fallen to the side of the truck too. |

He could have fallen to the side of the truck too. I have no idea if radar would have helped in this situation. Fighter airplanes have radars. And the radar tells the pilot if a plane or missile is headed towards them. But the radar does not stop the bullets or missiles from hitting them. Radar just tells the pilot something is in the area that is coming towards them. With radar on a bike, it would just tell you a car is coming up behind or to the side of you. Doesn't say the car is going to hit you. I have a mirror that tells me if a car is coming up behind me. Antiquated radar. But the mirror does not tell me if the car is going to run me over. |
