Default Driver who caused crash which seriously injured cyclist at crossroadsblackspot is fined

QUOTE:
A MOTORIST involved in a collision at a notorious accident blackspot in the New Forest which left a cyclist badly hurt has been fined by magistrates.

Ian Farmery (59), of Roberts Road, Hythe, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention in relation to the incident involving 50-year-old David Bensley at Ipley crossroads, near Applemore, on 15th January.

At Southampton Magistrates’ Court, the Bench put nine penalty points on Farmery’s driving licence. He was also fined £338 and told to pay £119 costs.

A further charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving was withdrawn by the prosecution.

As reported in the A&T, Mr Bensley, from Southampton, suffered serious head and leg injuries in the incident and was taken by ambulance to the city’s general hospital.

The Cycling UK member had been taking part in a Southampton Cycling and Touring Club ride through the New Forest at the time.

A string of collisions between cyclists and vehicles has resulted in Ipley crossroads being named one of the worst junctions in the country for cyclists. There have been several campaigns in recent years to improve its safety..

Hampshire County Council is currently planning to realign the crossroads, near Beaulieu, to make it staggered and prevent vehicles driving straight across.

Will the propose realignment also prevent bicycles from being pedalled
straight across the junction?
