Default What bike should i get

Gday,

Im looking at buying a mountain bike to ride to work and back on and get a
little fitter. save fuel on riding my motorbikes.

Things seem to have changed since i was a teen,

I will have a lot of hills, well one big one, easy to work, hard coming
home.

What sorta bike should i get, lots of gears
Suspention, disk brakes, gel seats?

im about 90kg and 170cm tall.

Should i just get one a $200 from kmart, or a fancy one off ebay?

Mad

Maybe - but what you really need is the right range of gears, not
necessarily lots of gears. If you end up with a MTB, you'll pretty
much end up with lots of gears anyway though.

Suspention,

This would be a big negative for a road commute, especially while
climbing that "big hill". All suspension will do for you is sap
energy that could otherwise be used to get you to work faster. The
most efficient bike you could get would be a (gasp...) road bike
rather than a mountain bike.

disk brakes,

There would be absolutely no advantage unless that hill is so long and
so steep that heating your rims up under braking would be a problem (I
kinda doubt that).

gel seats?

Everyone's butt is different. But while a really cushy saddle might
feel better for the first few miles, they tend to put more pressure on
the soft tissue than a harder saddle that allows your "sit bones" to
support your weight, and keeps the squishy bits happier.

You'd be much better off getting a nice used bike than a cheap new
one. For your mission statement, you're going to be able to find lots
of MTBs on Ebay (or yard sales) that'll work fine. In fact, the older
and funkier they are, the better they might be - rigid fork,
horizontal top tube, rack mounting points - all the kiss of death on a
modern MTB, but perfect for commuting.
