Sea to Shining Sea Support

Then join me and my group, we will help you have a dream vacation.
I’m setting off on a coast to coast bicycling journey this coming
summer. The plan is to include RAGBRAI in our trip. I’m riding with
two friends from the San Francisco Bay area to Yorktown, Virginia
following Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) maps. The Western
Express route to mid Kansas, up to RAGBRAI, then back down to the
Transamerica map. We are between 45 and 54-years of age, two men, one
woman. We also have one set of retired parents driving a support van
for us. We are not partiers but do have an occasional alcoholic
beverage. We feel we are fun loving people. We’re planning our
departure date to be July 2nd.

We will dip our rear wheels in the Pacific Ocean, probably Santa Cruz
or near San Gregorio, CA. We’ll dip our front wheels in the
Atlantic. We would like to have at least a dozen riders in our group,
including us, to help defray the cost of our drivers, support vehicle,
and fuel. I’m thinking the cost will be around $800 apiece. We have
recreational/race type bikes so we do not want to carry anything on
them.

We expect to take around 37 to 39 days in total so it means we’ll be
on the move for an average 130 plus miles per day. We do expect we’ll
take one day off per week for rest and laundry, or sightseeing,
probably every seven or eight days. I expect most of us will fly home
so we will pre-arrange our flights and plan the trip accordingly.

All food will be on your own; however there should be room in the van
for small coolers and a Coleman stove. Of course room for duffle bags
and camp chairs too. The ACA maps have details needed to find food
and services along the way.

If you are only going to Yorktown then you WON'T be dipping your front
wheel in the Atlantic ocean. You'll be dipping them in the York River
which connects to the Atlantic. You have to go just a LITTLE further
to get to the Atlantic. I know this because I actually live in the
Norfolk area...Oh...and I can actually READ a map!!!! SARCASM

Having lived for several years in Mathews, VA, I can tell you that the
York 'River' (at Yorktown) is a tidal estuary and can be considered to
be a part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Let the argument commence...

I digress to your information. You ARE correct. However, if you
really want to go Coast to Coast you still have to go a little further
east. Wouldn't you agree????

I a related post Paul points out that the area of the York river that
you plan on going to is, in point of fact, a Tidal Estuary. I do not
dispute this. However, if you want a TRUE Coast to Coast trip I still
suggest going just a little further to the east. A lot of people that
have done this go to Virginia Beach. Obviously that IS on the coast.

Yes, to get to the 'coast', RB and company will have to go about another
64 miles to get to Virginia Beach (assuming they cross the James River
using the Route 17 Bridge).
Although, if I were planning the trip, I might skip Yorktown altogether
and cross the James River further west (south of Williamsburg) using the
Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. And then make my way to Virginia Beach from there.

Now you could make a case that Buckroe Beach in (Hampton, VA) is 'on the
coast'. That is only 23 miles from Yorktown. See:

Quite ambitious. That is 20 mph for 6 1/2 hours every day. Does your group
have experience doing that for say ? four days in a row? Are you all
national level competitive athletes in masters age endurance sports? Can
you do a sub-5 hour century ride day after day?

Perhaps I am surprised only because I think that is about twice the pace I
could maintain. Although when I do organized hard long rides (Enchanted
Circle Century, New Mexico; Iron Horse, Durango, Colorado; Triple Bypass,
Colorado) I take about twice as long as the pros - for example Tom Danielson
in the Iron Horse. These are only one day events. Perhaps your goal is
possible but you are talking about two Tour De France efforts back to back.
