But ironically your suggestion (to use an angle grinder) about your own solution appears to be fitting. Considering the fact that I have found zero evidence of a "snap ring" on any freewheel, anyplace on the Internet. Yes, making stuff cheaper is the trend, but that doesn't stop anybody on the Internet from showing how cheaper than cheaper can be done. Please provide any evidence you have of such a snap ring on a freewheel with multiple cogs, like the Shimano MF-TZ21. I'm genuinely curious and I might someday use the information, even though for now I will be using a part that I ordered and is already in the mail. I can't remove a snap ring that I cannot see. Please point to it in the picture I posted... https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7792/...cfeb5a9b_z.jpg -- I also ordered a spoke tension meter. I don't skimp on tools. |

Andrew Muzi is a very respected bike shop employee who has helped many here over many years. He's forgotten more about bicycle mechanics than many of us will ever learn. If anyone knows the construction of your freewheel it would be A. Muzi. I see you didn't get more than one reply to your same question over on; http://forums.mtbr.com/drivetrain-sh...el-965622.html The snap ring is most likely semi hidden by that last cog that you want to remove. Maybe shining a bright light at it will allow you to see the thin joint where the two ends of the snap ring meet? Cheers Cheers |

Until he removes that cog it's best to have the freewheel on the hub unless he has access to a freewheel vice. Cheers |

I never knew you could do that. The cheapy ones from my youth were all in one. Istr you could get into the freewheel part from the back but by the time you needed to do that it was usually beyond resurrection :-( |

How to remove cogs from a (MF-TZ21) freewheel?
Thanks for the cliché. Anything is possible, but I doubt that a snap
ring would be located someplace where it would be destroyed by removing it. I'm pretty sure whatever is required to remove the cogs is on the end of the freewheel. If the smallest cog does not unscrew, perhaps the outer shell of the freewheel includes the smallest cog. While it's true there's only one answer on the MTBR forum, an answer that differs from Muzi's, at least it isn't shrouded in idiocy and noise. -- Sir Ridesalot i_am_cycle_pathic yahoo.ca wrote in news:d4c880fa-bd56-43a1-a7ae-58da83087a3f googlegroups.com: X-Received: by 10.52.188.225 with SMTP id gd1mr21576495vdc.2.1430537284845; Fri, 01 May 2015 20:28:04 -0700 (PDT) X-Received: by 10.182.142.97 with SMTP id rv1mr119031obb.17.1430537284788; Fri, 01 May 2015 20:28:04 -0700 (PDT) Path: eternal-september.org!mx02.eternal-september.org!feeder.eternal-september.org!usenet.blueworldhosting.com!feeder01 .blueworldhosting.com!peer03.iad.highwinds-media.com!news.highwinds-media.com!feed-me.highwinds-media.com!j5no4628690qga.1!news-out.google.com!n7ni22599igk.0!nntp.google.com!l13n o12765281iga.0!postnews.google.com!glegroupsg2000g oo.googlegroups.com!not-for-mail Newsgroups: rec.bicycles.tech Date: Fri, 1 May 2015 20:28:04 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: mi1anb$sn6$1 dont-email.me Complaints-To: groups-abuse google.com Injection-Info: glegroupsg2000goo.googlegroups.com; posting-host=64.228.149.130; posting-account=2ScyvAoAAABQnc3o8m-FIpwdnQ-MzjLx NNTP-Posting-Host: 64.228.149.130 References: mhs7a2$u6s$1 dont-email.me mhs7ef$u6s$2 dont-email.me mht7mj$34b$1 dont-email.me mhu791$9dn$1 dont-email.me f0cec4cc-a88b-4031-9b5a-96275c495b45 googlegroups.com mi02fb$bmr$1 dont-email.me mi1anb$sn6$1 dont-email.me User-Agent: G2/1.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: d4c880fa-bd56-43a1-a7ae-58da83087a3f googlegroups.com Subject: How to remove cogs from a (MF-TZ21) freewheel?
