Carrying a Cane ?
Per Frank Krygowski:
I think "Halt" pepper spray works best, whether walking, jogging or biking. Especially if the carrier has an air of confidence plus a bit of aggression. They do sense one's attitude. I used to use Mace - the kind you buy in the cop stores. What I found was that there was not need to get any of the stuff on the animal. Instead, I would just lay down a line between me and the dog. They would lose interest every time. -- Pete Cresswell |

Carrying a Cane ?
Per Frank Krygowski:
Regarding your last story, one friend of mine used a very similar tactic with a next door neighbor and his outdoor barking dog. This was back in the 1970s. My friend was an audiophile with quite a powerful stereo system. After repeated requests to keep the dog quiet, my friend ran a high quality microphone to the property line, hooked it up to his high-watt amplifier (and turned up to 11, no doubt), pointed the speakers at the neighbor's house, and sat back. The dog was inside by the next day. Somewhere I read an account by somebody who rigged up a speaker/parabolic reflector, aimed it a dog, and played some sort of sound that hurt the dog's ears. He claimed success - similar to the slingshot/ball bearing approach - but at a longer range and less traceable. -- Pete Cresswell |
