The bike I'm referring to is a hardtail, now the "Sunday" bike as I
picked up a cheap FS for a beater/snow/rain ride. My general theme
with this bike is light, nice and fast. It will see very little
pavement, and hopefully very little fire road. I figure since I

won't
be riding this in the snow anymore, I can get away from the wider
tires with the huge mud-bar tread. I'll be riding New England, so
it'll be hardpack with some roots & rocks thrown in. No ski-lift
stuff. My previous tires were great on dirt, snow etc but left a
little to be desired when riding up rock. They were slick on wet

wood
as well, but I don't hold that against them.
I also don't want to spend $90 on atire.
Suggestions?

Whatever Kenda suits your terrain.

Thanks for the pointer, I'll check their catalog.

I'm tempted toward the Fire XC Pro as well, but I'm not sure how to
tell if it's Japanese, Tiawanese, OEM, original, etc. That's before
red & blue sidewalls come into play...

Do yourself a favor and skip them. Some people have luck with them but
myself along with many others have had most of the knobs tear off in a
single 2 hour ride when using them on therear.

My philosophy is that there are so many tires out there that work well
why
even take a chance on one people have had trouble with.

I use the Kenda Kinetic 2.35 and I think CDB has recommended the
Nevegal in
the past. I'll probably pick up a Nevegal next time.

Greg

Yeah, I've got the 2.35 Kinetics on the SS, and the 2.35 Nevegal on
the double squish, and love those tires. I also love my 2.35 Blue
Groove on the front. But its high desert hardpack, and dry forest
loam for most all our riding. We can't ride the mud here, as it tears
up the trails too badly. The BG/Nevegal combo is pretty popular, and
for our terrain, there's good reason.

CDB

I'm looking to pick up a Nevegal for the front and maybe the small block
for the rear. You are running the 1 ply ver., correct?

Had been running the 2.5 Nevegal, 2.5 Blue Groove combo for a couple of
years...hard to beat except for sidewall slashes.

Now on 2.3 small eight on the back. Every time I look at it I want to take
it off...the knobs are so wimpy. But it seems to work well. I also took
the Blue Groove off the front and running a 2.55 Weirwolf LT. I am
switching back to the Nev/BG combo for this summers Mammoth Trips. Although
I have been enjoying the lighter tires.

Cool, thanks for the info, Dean. I thinking there's no way that small

apparently it a pretty good tire. I'm going miss running 2.5s, but there'

Spinergy MTB wheels? Really? I didn't think that those had a very good

You are correct and actually their reputation was horrendous, especially
in the CS
dept. But, IIRC, supposedly they have cleaned up their act in the past
couple years.
They've been pretty responsive and helpful so far; time will tell.

I was a intrigued with their PBO spokes and they use Enduro® brand bearings
in their hubs, which is one good sign. I found a decent used pair in "like
new
cond" with a decent discount from retail, so I went for it. They are
machined and
anodized beautifully. It was one of those purchases where half your brain
is
telling you to do it, while the other half says, “dude - don't do it!”

They *do* roll real nice while in the bike stand

Ah, super cool, if he's rocking them and they're holding up, I know
they're worthy.
Although, the pix are with the DH versions, which I know are good
performers; I just wasn't
100% on the XC version.... But I see he's been rolling those, too 8-)
