Default what feels like chain skip

My LBS just replaced the rear free hub, cassette, and chain on my MTB (with
some cable housing thrown in too). I'm getting what feels like chain skip
in the third and fourth (especially) smallest cogs. I called my LBS guy and
he suggested the cable might be too tight (or possibly, loose). He
suggested I check to see if the upper derailer hanger wheel is properly
aligned under the cog. It looks like if anything it is off-center toward
the next smaller cog. Suggestions?

Thanks,

Turn the adjuster barrel till it's right under the cog. If it's an
issue of the jockey wheel not being in the same plane as the cog, then
that needs to be rectified.

Absolutely. Make them do the job they were paid to do.

Yup. Barrel adjuster, counter-clockwise. Easy fix.

either bring it into the shop to have them tighten it up for you or as
was suggested above, turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise on your
shifters or derailler, bringing it out and tightening the cable or if
that doesn't work adjust the inner and outer limits on your derailer,
but that's a last resort and requires more time and patience to set
properly since you might not know which screw adjusts the inner and
which adjusts the outer.

check out sheldon brown's website if you still need help, everything
you'll ever need to knwo and mo
http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

finally, don't flip at your LBS as it seems someone insinuated you had
the right to, new chains and cables stretch and require a bit of
tweeking after the first dozen rides. Your LBS should take care of
this minor tuneup for you, but taking care of it yourself will set you
on the path to a very zen relationship with your bike.

Wall...the limit screws wouldn't have any effect on the thing when in
3rd or 4th cogs...

Chains don't 'stretch' for the first couple of rides...'May'e, one der
adjust if the gent had new cables, but if installed correctly and 'pre
stretched' by the installer, it doesn't need 'tweaks'.

For the record, I have nothing at all bad to say about this bike shop. I
may have rushed them a bit as I happened to be in town and called, just to
see if it happened to be ready. The guy does free or nearly free labor for
me on bikes I didn't buy there (because I moved in from elsewhere), he
sponsors a local club and rides, including overnights and occasionally
picking up the tab for folks on rides. Good guy, good shop.

If it had just been the chain and cassette I would've done it myself. But
those Bontrager wheels give me the heebies.
