Seat/pedal distance is very important on recumbents.

There's also the problem that you can mash very effectively, and put
too much strain on the knee that way.

If your cadence is around 90+ then it won't be a mashing problem, so
check your seat distance.

Wot Zeebee sez... also experiment with different placements of the foot
on the pedal and maybe shorter cranks.
