Schwinn Varsity at Walmart
Mike Jacoubowsky wrote: It appears that the venerable name "Varisty" has been resurrected by Schwinn. I was at Walmart tonight and they have an aluminum framed road bike that Schwinn is calling Varsity. It was $199. If it's not 16-gauge gas-pipe tubing, it's not a Varsity. I always thought it would have been a cool marketing scheme to put the Varsity name on something superlight and high-quality. The ultimate inside joke. If I see some made in mainland China [1] bicycle shaped object with "Schwinn Paramount" stickers on it, I will lose it. [1] Sorry Mr. Brandt. -- Tom Sherman - Fox River Valley |

Schwinn Varsity at Walmart
The SCHWINN Varsity was an almost bombproof ten-speed "sport" bike that
was perfect for riding to school (Schwinn's original idea?), work and general "beating around town". But not much else. It's also, I bet, the route hat led a lot of us into more serious cycling :-3) - - Comments and opinions compliments of, "Your Friendly Neighborhood Wheelman" My web Site: http://geocities.com/czcorner To E-mail me: ChrisZCorner "at" webtv "dot" net |

[1] Sorry Mr. Brandt. -- Tom Sherman - Fox River Valley Tom, Do you have a barf bag? If not, next time you (or a friend) are an airline passenger, you better pick one up and carry it with you. Is it Chinese goods in general or the desecration of the Schwinn name in particular that you find most troublesome? Personally I avoid buying goods produced or distributed under unfair labor practices. A Chinese bike at WalMart fails my test on both accounts. I can understand a poor American buying a cheap Chinese bike; but why would a person pay to support profits generated through oppressive, coercive, unsafe, polluting industries in a place where human rights, let alone worker rights are ignored when s/he can afford not to? There should be some respect for tradition and heritage, so the Paramount [1] name should not be used on a bicycle of less than premium quality. I also prefer to buy products made by people earning a living wage. Moving production from the US, Europe and Japan to places like mainland China undercuts the standard of living for other workers (real wages for all but upper management have fallen for the last 3 decades in the US). The Chinese making our products are upping their standard of living. Rich P.S. I think you're a troll, BTW. Yes and if Chinese workers' standard of living is raised high enough and if their government allows them to bargain for better wages and working conditions, manufacturers will take their capital to whatever part of the world will work cheaper and set up shop there, probably under some other authoritarian government. In democracies the workers tend to get too uppity. Max |

The only difference is you're willing to say it out loud--or in black and white in this case. I appreciate your candor (no joke. I mean that.) Max |
