The grocery bill for this endeavor would be huge. I would assume 200 miles a
day you are taking 4000-8000 calories depending on the person. Granted in
the the TDF they eat a lot and probably use more each day but that is only
for 3 weeks.

A few good hamburgers with fries and a dozen or so pints of good Belgian
Ale should provide that :-)

I did some digging and learned that Mr Steve Abrahams attempt on the one
year cycling record commenced on 1st Jan 2015. It ended in March 2015
when he broke an ankle during an altercation with a moped in Somerset.
Distance covered was 16,888 miles. For the time elapsed, that was some
2500 miles ahead of the 75 year old record.

You need to do some more digging. He's still riding. He attempted to
carry on with the broken ankle, riding a recumbent for a few weeks, but
eventually decided he wasn't going to break the record, so reset his
start time to back when he was fit again.

He's at 61941 miles for his original start time, and 26208 miles for his
revised start time of 8 August (hmm, is that latter figure low?).

OTOH Kurt Searvogel looks like he's going to make it there first - 22
days to go.

(interesting comparing the two - SA is classic British Audax -
mudguards, rack bag, riding through the UK winter (splashy). KS seems to
alternate between a TT bike and a recumbent, and is in the south US for
winter.)

What a bummer. You spend all year riding your bike and don't get a record. I hope there are sponsorship dollars or something more than sore knees and an incredible farmer tan.

No tan for Steve right now :-)

I think it's costing him quite a lot of money - a little bit of
sponsorship and donations, but quite a lot of savings depletion going on.

He does have 7 months after Kurt stops to play catch-up though.
