Sometimes cyclist just get overtaken by trucks, but in general: cyclists: stay away from the left (inner) side of trucks, if necessary bt braking or hopping on the sidewalk. |

Along with buses and snow plows. I think it's the boring repetitiveness of the job. |

It sounds like one of those incidents was caused by riding at the curb side of a large vehicle that turns in that direction. Whether there's a bike lane there or not, it's a suicidal place to be. The other report said "Police said Casperson was riding his bike southbound on 17th Avenue on the east side of the street and was crossing McLoughlin when the collision occurred." So the guy on the bike was riding on the wrong side of the road. These are good examples of crashes that wouldn't happen to more competent cyclists. -- - Frank Krygowski |

With regards to: Cyclist dies in wreck with garbage truck So according to the cop it's the bicyclist who must know whether they're in a blind spot or not? "But Portland Police Lt. Mark Kruger said that solving the problem requires more than just faulting drivers. "It's a terrible tragedy for everybody involved," he said, adding that he couldn't comment on the specifics of today's collision yet. Cyclists need to ride defensively and be aware if they are moving too fast or are in a place where motorists can't see them, he said. "You can be right, and you can be dead right."" What if the bicyclist isn't a motorist or a large truck driver How are they to know whether the driver can see them or not? Cheers |

Or what if the truck passed the cyclist and puts him inside his turn? This is a good reason to ride in a prominent lane position. They're less likely to forget immediately after they've passed. If the lane is very wide (or you're in a bike lane) and a car or truck half-passes just before an intersection then begins slowing, one should take it as a very serious warning. Get ready to do some quick evasive maneuvers. -- - Frank Krygowski |

Get ready to do some quick evasive maneuvers. Yes, drop back and prepare to go around, if possible. A bus did that to me last week -- went by and then immediately cut over at pretty high speed, lining up for a stop. I'm going between 25-30mph (mild downhill); I dropped back; the the bus pulls over; I go around . . . and the bus pulls out, having decided no one wanted to get on/off. I'm directly next to the bus and get pushed in to middle of two, fast moving lanes. I'm trying to drop back without getting killed by cars behind the bus. And then some asswipe in a car yells at me. "You're going to get yourself killed, etc., etc. -- as though I planned to be riding where I was. F****** moroon. I also agree that on narrow roads with slow moving traffic, it does pay to take the lane. Getting in to traffic is sometimes difficult though, depending on traffic speed and sight lines. -- Jay Beattie. |
