| I'm trying to think of or find the name for a specific type of
| clamping mechanism. *A common application is marina antennas, where
it
| is referred to as a "ratchet mount". *A pic can be seen here
| http://tinyurl.com/63r8gh
|
| There is a part on the clamp with teeth that are engaged when the
| handle or screw is tightened, fixing the antenna. *When the handle
or
| screw is loose, the teeth are not engaged and the two halves can
| rotate independently of each other over the screw as an axis.
|
| If I can figure out what this type of clamp is called, hopefully I
can
| find them in small and light versions. *My application is basically
as
| small and light as possible. *Needs to support 6oz with some
jostling,
| and can't weight more than a couple/few oz.
|
| Don't need all the marine antenna mounting nonsense - just the two
| circular parts with the engaging teeth that are can be held together
| with a bolt and nut. *I've seen this same design in use mounting
other
| things - marina radios, GPS and Radar units and displays come to
mind.
|
| Any help appreciated.
|
| Thanks.

| Hi,
| Don't know what this type of mount is called - but this has a similar
| function, and is bicycle related!

Anyone know of a mount with the 1/4-20 camera mount?

Thanks

I would consider the type of conduit clamp shown in SMSs bicycle
lighting site, with the bolt that would connect to the second clamp
going into the camera. An alternative would be to use a rubberized
conduit clamp w/ a nylon 1/4-20 screw straight into the camera.
Totall cost would be under $1. The type of clamp is shown here
http://tinyurl.com/5lc2ps (although you'd want it inverted from that
picture, so the flat part is at the top of the bars). I recently
purchased one of those for $0.34 at a local industrial supply place
for a camera mount on an RC aircraft. It seems great so for for bench
testing, but hasn't been in the air due to rain. My first aerial vid
was poor due to the angle of the camera, which is why I started
exploring these mounts.

Come to think of it, i'd use the rubberized mount like pictured above
to minimize vibration. Make sure you go a smidge small wht the clamp
so you can really tighten it onto the bars.

Also, I've heard it's better to use nylon than steel bolts since the
threads in the cam are nylon. I can't verify this, or explain why,
it's just what I was told.

I did see numerous DIY mounts, One Harley mount impressed me. I guess
its DIY time.
I picked up a cheepo Targus tripod that i'll hack into something.

I thought about importing those camera mounts from Taiwan, but there's a
1000 piece minimum order, with a wholesale cost of $10.50 each. I don't
think that there's enough of a market for these to order 1000 pieces.
