Cyclist gets suspended sentence

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A cyclist was sentenced to three months in jail on
charges of manslaughter in connection with an incident in which a
heavy-duty motorcycle rider was killed in mid-August of last year,
according to the Taipei District Court.

The bicycle rider was surnamed Hsu, 56, a resident of Wanhua District,
Taipei. He was riding a bicycle along Hoping W. Road at midnight on Aug.
15 when he was hit by a heavy-duty motorcyclist surnamed Tsai near the
Wanhua Police Precinct, mainly due to his failure to have installed his
bicycle with a reflection mirror, making it so Tsai was unable to notice
Hsu riding in front of him. Hsu was slightly hurt as a result but Tsai
suffered serious internal bleeding in the brain after braking suddenly.
Some 15 days later, Tsai died.

Hsu turned himself in to police after the incident, and the Taipei
District Court ruled that Hsu should face a jail term of three months
for violating traffic safety rules and on charges of manslaughter for
failing to have a reflection mirror.

But the court also suspended Hsu's imprisonment for two years, and ruled
Hsu would be allowed to pay fines instead of serving the sentence.
