Rear Hub Bearing Roar
"Steve Sr." wrote in message
... The last time the bike was on the work stand I was re-lubing the shifter cables and noticed a "roaring" sound when the rear wheel was spun up to a pretty good speed. The noise is more likely freehub or freewheel noise. There are an inordinate number of 1/8" ball bearings in there and they can make quite noise when spun up, probably from the cogs resonating or something like that. The noise never really goes away unless you grease the freehub/wheel, which is a bad thing. So just lube the freehub/wheel with some fairly thick oil and it'll be fine. Cheers, Scott.. |

Yeah, the Deore freehub on my touring bike does the same thing. I did everything I could think of to make sure it was properly lubed, but it still "roars". I've ridden many thousands of miles on it with no problem. --Josh |

Only when the wheel is rotating backwards. |
