That Wartsila Sulzer RTA96-C is some motor!
http://www.emma-maersk.com/engine/Wa...er_RTA96-C.htm
"The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version."

The 14-cylinder version's power is described as "80,080 kW (109,000 hp) Engine: Wartsila 14RT-Flex96c..." which is nice enough, but then follows the killer backwards-reflecting understatement in the specification of the wing engines: "...plus 40,000 hp from five Caterpillar 8M32" -- a pic a couple of pages into this brochure with the technician standing next to one of the 8M32 Caterpillars gives you an idea of the size of one of the five wing engines of a Wartsila:

I wonder if they'll sell me just one RTA96-C cylinder for a small hobby project?

Wistfully yours

My grandfather was chief engineer on a ship and after he got to America he jumped ship and rode the rails to California and became the operating engineer for Spreckels Sugar mill in Salinas about the time that they opened for business. Those used those sorts of engines.
