Possibly, but I think it was the fork steerer tube that broke, rather
than the stem itself.

I could be wrong...

Discovery doesn't use Specialized stuff (Bontrager).

Yeah -- all magnesium would be better because then you could drill a
bunch of holes in the thing out to make it even lighter!!!! Sweet.

Indeed. And then you could stuff it with an elastomer and make wild
claims about vibration dampening.

Specialized used to follow decent engineering standards. Given the long
history of failures in magnesium componentry on bicycles I can't
understand why they would be so negligent as to use this material on
one of the most important safety critical parts of the the steering
assembly. How many more grams does the aluminum faceplate weigh anyway?

I would never use magnesium in a place where it was being used to make
something stupid-light (which is always the case) and its failure could be
life-threatening. Just way too many stories about magnesium parts failing.

I ordered an ITM magnesium stem for my bike a few years ago. Insanely light,
very cool-looking. But I never installed it. It scared the heck out of me.
Now it will probably find use as an adapter that mounts to a seatpost to
allow use of a handlebar bag behind the seat.

A non-Bontrager part?? Does Keith or Mr Trek know?? You are treading on
thin ice here, Mike....

Naaah, he never mounted it, then managed to dis it in a public forum
without ever using it. Kinda like if I were to buy a copy of a
Michael Moore movie. ;-)

Precisely! I didn't think I was being *that* subtle...

It will be funny to see it mounted to my seatpost though. A $200 stem being
used to hold a handlebar bag.
