Theft of the first.

2) How long before you bought your second?

Maybe a week after the theft.

With windsurfing stuff, at least, I've found that once I have a big enough heap
of stuff in the garage; the occasional sail, board, mast, and/or booms can come
and go without anybody noticing.

When the SO stopped and counted the bikes on the patio about a month
ago, I had some explaining to do. After 8 bikes were stolen from us
last August, there were three left in serviceable condition, and some
parts-donor hulks. I got rid of the hulks and acquired a couple of
replacements for the most needed of the stolen bikes right away, which
left us with five. But things accumulate around me...and when she
went out there and found that the count was up to nine again, I had to
carefully avoid mentioning the three frames in the garage which were
in varying states of assembly. (I guess I could probably sell a
couple of them, but when my daughter's friends are over, and they
decide it would be fun to take a ride, I've got enough rolling stock
to outfit the usual crowd...)

1) I bought a road bike as my second. More fun to ride on the road than the
MTB, and a decent fair weather commuter. The third bike was a low priced
flat bar road bike to use as grocery getter/town bike. My other road bike is
too pretty to lock up outside somewhere, and it kinda screams STEAL ME. The
fourth bike is on the way, a light touring bike with a rack and fenders.
2) Several years. Five, I think. But the third one came a year after that,
and the fourth one a year after that.

Weirdly phrased question, but it always was something that the old
one could not offer. The upright hybrid was faster, lighter, more
comfortable and capable of rougher terrain. Then the tadpole
trike was more comfortable, more stable, able to handle higher
loads and generally more interesting.

: 2) How long before you bought your second?

Years: bikes cost money and they also last for quite a while.

Default Survey Question: When do you buy a new bike?

On average, 1/18th of the USA population buys a new bike every year.
Let's assume that the average bicyclist is between the ages of 4 and
70, with expected lifespan of 77. I'm not saying there aren't
bicyclists older than 70 or under 4, i'm just saying that their
numbers might be vanishingly small. Then on average 15% of the
population is not part of this upgrade cycle. Therefore, the average
person in the USA buys a new bicycle about every 15 years.

After my Giant OCR2 underwent some unplanned automotive percussive testing
resulting in the downgrading of the functionality of my bike. i.e. Cars Suck

About three weeks. I waited to get the insurance settlement from the driver
of the car and his employer (an insurance company).

The Surly Crosscheck has been a great bike for me. It makes a great
commuter with plenty of room for fenders/wide tires/racks/etc.
