Almost. We were down with the bikes waiting to dock, when this guy
nearby looks at his mate and in a panicky voice asks him where he dumped
the lunch rubbish. Seems he'd taken off his very fancy bike computer and
dropped it in his New Improved Plastic Lunch Bag so it wouldn't get
nicked, and then promptly forgot about it. He was last seen heading
upstairs to start rummaging about in the bins...

Ran my MTB Specialised Stumpjumper with chucky (I call them ‘truck’) 2
x 2.00 tyres. Everyone else in my group upgraded to roadies over th
last year.

Flats. Got ‘em this year, but just outa Geelong. No real prob as I ha
my tube/tyres nicely taulked up, had the drill down to a fine art
10mins & I was away.
A mate in our group copped a tack in Rye. I swung over for the mora
support. A lady then pulled up with a hissy rear; “ can you help m
with this, I’m don’t know what to do?”. I kinda didn’t know how to tak
it, but I did the gentlemanly thing (no, she was well into her 40’s
didn’t have a cyclist’s bum or anything). She was on a roadie, nic
one, kinda new, had 105 stuff (is that good? I only know MTB stuff)
Anyway she let me do the whole thing, didn’t drop the wheel out for me
didn’t offer to pump it for me. Her rear rim & tyre was coated wit
grease or oil. I smelled my hand as I worked the tyre off & it smelle
like sump oil.
This is my 2 cents now: I reckon you should not do a 210km ride withou
knowing what to do when things go wrong. Regardless whether you’re
bloke or a sheila, It’s your responcibility.

Also, I must admit I saw a fair amount of pretty shoddy riding ou
there on the ‘Bay ride this year, made me wince a few times. There ma
be a lot of bikes on a small amount of road out there, but we stil
have to kinda share the road with others too…

Comments and questions welcome.

I also went on my first ATBIAD on Sunday - back in the saddle again today
for the ride to work was a little stiff, sore and chafed ;-)

I went the same way as you, and would have been only a little behind you
(arrived in Sorrento 9:15) - managed to keep with a pack headed by some guys
in Linfox tops on road bikes until the final hill from Mt Martha. So the
first half went well, got onto the boat easily when my friends caught up
(for the 10am ferry) - one of the group got a tack in his tyre going through
Rye I think.

At little river (about 150km in) my body crashed however - I could no longer
keep up pace because my legs were starting to scream. We struggle with the
last 60km of the ride, and were certainly glad to finish.

So, my advice for people thinking of doing this in the future is:

1. Make sure you get some good training in. I did only two half decent
training rides (one of 80km and one of 70km) and did about 20km total in the
last three weeks leading up to the event.
2. Road bikes would probably make a difference in the ride due to the better
gear ratios, no shocks, lighter tyres and less tyre contacting the road.
3. Make sure you are comfortable in your saddle - you will be working on
there for a long time!

All the best,

Tim

This was my first ATB. I went with a group from work. We had a small
group that did training rides along beach rd to Mordialloc or Frankston
for about 3 months, gradually extending it to Mornington and Dromana.
I found the first 100km ride very hard even though my commute to work is
22km each and I ride everyday regardless of the weather.
Unfortunately two weeeks before the ATB I damaged the archillies tendon
on my left leg. I doubtfull about starting but the rehab went ok.
I went Queenscliff first. Got to the bottom of Westgate Bridge at 5:25.
The queue was already over 1/2 km long! The ride over Westgate was
awfull. Thousands of bikes shoulder to shoulder wheel to wheel jammed
into the left lane. Saw one poor bloke wheeling his bike back the bridge,
the chain had broken!
Ther was a prang on the Williamstown Rd offramp. Some of the marker poles
had been knocked down.
Does anybody know whose idea it was to send all the cyclst down the off
ramps and back up the otherside? Vic Roads or BV. Also who put the poles
in the middle of the road on the first offramp! it was very dangerous.
Then we meandered through the back of Altona and Point Cook. I remember
thinking that I hope the people in front know where they are going
because I didnt have a clue.
The archillies got a bit tender after Weribee so I slowed down.
Foun some of my workmates on the side of the road with a puncture.
The side wall had cut from rubbing on the rim. This bike was new,
only 900 km!. Another workmate had bought an identical bike at the
same time and also had a tire go the same way two weeks before. We
were able to make a makesift repair with a peice of old inner tube I
was carrying. This got them to Queenscliff ok.
Between geelong and Queenscliff I got held up in medical emergancy
after Leopold and lost 45 minutes.
Got Queenscliff about 11:30. Just missed the cutoff for the 1:00pm Ferry!!
Had to wait tothe 2:00pm Ferry. Not happy. 2.5 hours wait for the ferry.
Got too Sorrento around 3:00pm.
Took it slow and steady so the archillies would cope. Got to North Rd
around 6:45 and called it quits. It was too dark by then and my right
archillies was sore too.
It has taken most of the week to recover from that. Now to get fit for
the GVB!

Okay, this is my first post in this forum, normally I hang out in the running forums. Anyway, I was taking photos of riders passing through Werribee between 6.40 and 8.50 am. My exact location was here (x marks the spot, so to speak).

There's around 1400 photos sorted in time order, so if you know roughly your time passing through Werribee you should be able to determine if your photo is there or not. Normally, for running events, I index each photo by bib number but unfortunately, most riders were not displaying bib numbers so bib number search is not possible. The photos can be found here and free to download. Enjoy.

Cheers,

Steve.
