But Surly is a division of Quality Bicycle Products located in Minneapolis.. Biggest US distributor of bike parts. They supply parts and supplies to every US bike shop. Surly, and Salsa another QBP brand, have everything made in China. Not sure about their customer service. Is the customer service dept. in Minneapolis? Or in China? Seems a bit odd that a Chinese made bike would have customer service in Minneapolis. Seems more natural that customer service would stay in the country that made the bike. I can understand why the above person thinks the customer service is poor. If I was an American working for an American company and someone called me about a Chinese bike, I'd say talk to the Chinese. Here is the number for the Chinese diplomat. |

I was about to go to the shop to get measured for a Surly Long Haul Trucker frame. *BUT* The Surly website says that there is only a *3 year limited warranty* on the frame and also *Not* to use a kickstand as the frame is not designed for the loads a kickstand can produce. This is with either a chainstay mounted one or one that mounts on the rear chainstay/ seatstay area. This frame's regular price here is $550.00 CDN and is on sale for $340.00 for a short time on existing stock. Why only a 3 year warranty on a steel frame? I expected a lifetime limited warranty at least on a steel touring frame. A 3 year limited warranty on what's suposed to be a quality steel heavy duty touring frame just doesn't make sense to me. Even many department store steel BSOs have lifetime warranties on the frame. Again, why such a short warranty period from Surly for the LHT frame? Has the quality dropped a lot from what it used to be? Any light you can shed on why there's such a short warranty period will be immensely appreciated by me. So, I note that this thread originated in 2011, so I'm sure that the OP now has other things to think about. What!? No! He's still obsessing about his LHT frame[1] But from time to time someone unearths one of these zombie threads. What causes threads like this to be resurrected? Did "mrbill67z" come across it in some other "aggregator" forum? Does he have a newsreader that can't sort by date? Could he be scouring the internet for a chance to denigrate Surly? Just curious, really. It's going to be me in a decade or so when I can't tie my own shoe laces and Jobst is plain *WRONG*. [1] I have two. Quite allright imho. |

Yo, Dimbo, that's you, Krygowski: People look for information in these threads. They don't care if uptight control freaks like you want them to start a new thread instead.

Well, whatever the devil Surly is, I admired their designer a few years ago when I looked into the Karate Monkey. That's a frame that gives a home-constructor of his dream bike a lot of possibilities. I couldn't think of anything I'd want to connect to my bike that wasn't provided for. The only reason I didn't buy a Karate Monkey frame is that the construction is nowhere near as superior as the design; in fact, the welding on the frame I saw was bloody crude. I decided it was too roughly executed for a sensitive fellow like me. On hand of the Karate Monkey, which could be my sort of bike if it were made with rather more punctilio, I'm not surprised to discover that the Long Haul Trucker is very popular with another kind of cyclist. Usually making the dates not obvious, so you don't really realize it's a 20 year old request. How people find those posts is another question. A chance to slag on surly certainly seems likely. -- sig 118 |

Rethinking getting Surly Long Haul Trucker frame?
IIRC, Surly's warranty is only valid if a(n) LBS builds up the frame, as well. But 3 years is perfectly reasonable, IMO. In other words, it's a "free from defects" warranty - not a "will last a lifetime" warranty. And C$340? And large frames available? Send the link!
