Default Helmet saves boy from hurting his knee

"QUOTE:

A CALL has gone out for more safeguards for young users of the Bury St
Edmunds skatepark after a boy was injured . Josh Ames-Ledwidge, 15, suffered
a serious injury to his right leg while he was using his BMX at the Olding
Road facility.

His grandparents, Mike and Monica Ames, say that when they got to the scene
there were about 70 youngsters using the popular facility but only one in 10
was wearing protective headgear. Mr Ames, a former mayor of St Edmundsbury,
said that Josh was wearing a helmet, which saved him from being badly
disfigured. The teenager spent two days in West Suffolk Hospital and
underwent surgery on his knee under general anaesthetic. He may need a skin
graft to repair the damage."
ENDS.

"Saved him from being badly disfigured."??

Is there no end to the miracles that helmets can perform?

I agree, there is no evidence that his head made contact so it was a daft
thing to say that a helmet had saved him from being injured when in fact the
boy had fallen on his knee and injured it.

What point are you trying to make Simon.

It's probably a pointless question but how do you know what evidence was
or wasn't available to Mr Ames?

Only based on the information in the news story. I don't know what happened
and neither does Simon but it gave him a weak opportunity to make a dig at
safety helmets, something he calls "magic hats".

He is a true devotee to his religion of psycholism. I hope he makes a
recovery at some point but without him wanting to recover, it's probably
hopeless.

Ad hominem snipped.

I would have thought that the plaster on the knee, the totally
unmarked head and the crutches would have been enough of a clue to
show that the helmet had nothing at all to do with being saved from
being "badly disfigured". Even the kid himself says he fell on his
knee - Columbo's job is safe, that is for sure.

The fact that his head was unmarked and "Mr Ames, a former mayor of St

being badly disfigured" might just be a clue **** for brains.

So out of the 70 or so users of the skatepark, the one who did
something to seriously injure himself was one of the 7 or so that were
wearing a helmet.

Seems to be evidence in favour of risk compensation.

I would be interested if you could point to any evidence of risk compensation
research which shows that it takes place as regards cycle helmets.
