Would I be right in saying that's the MTB'er Claire Baxter?

I know the guy in the Richmond Cyclery colours in the middle pic who belongs
to the the Pinarello that's flying through the air. I think he said
actually landed on top of the other guy and hence escaped relatively
unscathed. The other guy was not so lucky.

*confession*

I only glove when it's cold.

I have NEVER landed on my hands. Old judo habit.

I think you meant to say:
"I have never YET landed on my hands"? ;-)

Of course, I've never studied judo, so I hand-plant more
often. It's funny though, when I run through glass and
scuff my tyres, I do it with my bare fingers so I don't
ruin the gloves! :-S

I'll pay closer attention to see if the Glenvale riders go
without gloves. I just assumed everyone wore them?
I often ride without gloves but not racing..

Maybe you're right. But I went through all my army field phases without
gloves, because they annoyed me with all the dirt getting stuck down
them. I couldn't figure out how everyone else was cutting their hands
up. I do the same with the glass... but mine is out of necessity - I
have no cycle gloves. Most people looked at me in horror when I showed
up at the ADF champs looking like a triathlete. At least I remembered to
remove those profile bars. Wouldn't they love my commute bike - with the
little orange reflectors on the wheels.

Yep, I think it's a triathlon habit, no time to put on gloves, no
sirree!

I see on the DEFWEB that the ADF champs are going to be held in Enoggera
this year at a date tba......I am thinking of having a crack this year (if
dates fit in with work). From experience, what were they like in terms of
numbers, organisation, level of comp etc....

I see that they are having a TT, crit, and road race....do you know what the
spacings are between events??

Also I'd like to share the thoughts of a mate of mine who rode a motorbike
and always wore full leather gloves, even when we were at Enoggera and he
was riding in shorts and a singlet. When I asked him about it he related a
gem that his dad (also a motorbike rider) had asked him......

"do you know anyone well enough to get them to wipe your bum for you while
your hands a recovering from gravel rash?"

Words of wisdom, passed on for the next generation.

That's her. But she's a roadie these days.

That's even better than sacrificing your own body to save your bike.
Have to remember that :-)

I see on the DEFWEB that the ADF champs are going to be held in Enoggera
this year at a date tba......I am thinking of having a crack this year (if
dates fit in with work). From experience, what were they like in terms of
numbers, organisation, level of comp etc....

This year the cycle champs were at Holsworthy in conjunction with the
ADF Endurance championships, 27 Feb - 01 Mar. The swimming champs were
cancelled, and the time trial didn't happen because of some restriction
the RAAFies put on it.

The 60km road race was held at 0900 on the Friday, it was 13 laps with a
nasty uphill into a cross headwind. Enoggera will definitely be a better
course! I hadn't ever done a road race before and got dropped from the
pack in the first lap, and rode the rest on my own. There were only
three female competitors, one was in the lead pack until the last few
laps, finished in about 1:35 (?), one hung in there (me) and finished in
2 h, one DNF. One guy had an Aus jersey on, but I forget his name.
There were about 30 competitors in all, and everyone I lapped pulled
out, and the pack passed me on the uphill where I couldn't jump on,
dammit. Timing was good, downside was there was a speed limit of 25km/h
on one particular corner (which some people ignored). Apparently a lot
more people normally turn up, but due to the time of year, most units
were unwilling to release people.

We went back at 1400 for the Crit 40min + 3 laps on a 900m course.
Unfortunately for me there were only two females, we got lapped after
about 15 minutes by the boys and had to finish there. That sucked
because I would've liked to have seen how we went on our own. That's my
gripe. The events were well organised though, Greg Young did really
well. And I got a free cycle uniform. Team that with the free singlet
from the 10km run the next day (which I actually ran a PB for, and came
2nd) and the free swimmers from the Olympic Distance tri on the Monday
(came 3rd but was massively disappointed with my performance, but DAMN
it was good to have bars back on my bike!) and I did really well in the
gear-collection!

I thought the break in between the races was too long or too short on
the Friday - obviously for the Crit people wanted to warm up we only had
a few hours to eat lunch, rest, and get back there. If the race was
later we could've rested and then warmed up again, if it was sooner we
could've eaten and gotten back into it, but it was just that length
where you started to stiffen up and couldn't recover.

I learned that 5 months of triathlon cycling probably did not prepare me
for the event but I had a blast anyway! There's some decent reviews in
Army News, you can do a search on DEFWEB. Actually, do a search for me
and you'll pull up all the articles. How tragic is that.

I'm sure there's plenty of those around... not that there's anything
wrong with that. So which end of Enoggera do you hide out at?

I was at Enoggera in 91-92, and then in 97-98. I am now in Melb.

I will interested to see how they spread out the road race, crit, and
TT......I would think that the TT would have to go last and definately not
on the same day as the other two.

In the road race, was there any team tactics between the three services or
was it a free-for-all?

I saw that race - the air force were flying at the start, but then the army
attacked
but blew up on the climb, and the navy were hopeless, they were sunk from
the start.

But how much heat can you actually expect to lose
just removing gloves? Do you even feel the heat on
your hands at 40kph+? If you're not in enough pain
from the race that you notice your sweating hands..
you need to move up a grade :-P
Anyway, I'm of the opinion that not wearing gloves
in a crit is silly.. but they're not my fingies so to each
their own...
