BREAKING NEWS -- BROKEN CRANK
I just broke my probably 8th crank, but who's counting. I was out of the saddle, sprinting full blast up a 100 yard 5% grade in light traffic getting over to a left turn shelter/lane. In fact, I had taken the lane way earlier than usual because I had such a good head of steam up. Snapped the right arm which caused me to veer left toward on-coming traffic. I thought I was going down and then recovered and wobbled to the right curb -- waiting to get smacked by the car behind me. Tweaked my back, but it's a wreck anyway..
This was a classic Jobst break right across the pedal eye. The first one of those I've had in two decades. Ultegra 9sp 2-piece Hollowtech. The crank had seen a lot of use over maybe 7 years. I'm not sure of its age. I swapped it off another bike and put it on my Cannondale CX when I got tired of buying ISIS BBs for the OEM TruVativ crank on that bike. It was scuffed, but not around the pedal eye. My first broken 2-piece. I'm so proud! The bummer is that I left my pedal on the dark pavement. I'm going to look for it tomorrow on the way to work. It didn't stick to my foot as usual. Luckily, I was only a half-mile or so from home and could ride home one-legged. I snagged the Ultegra crank off my super swanky CAAD 9 rain bike so I can ride to work tomorrow. I'll get a new compact for the rain bike. The other bummer is that when I took the crank out of my CAAD 9, the right BB30 bearing is already shot (I use press in bearings with the Wheels Mfg Shimano adapters). I dread knocking that out because I used a tough adhesive when I put it in. -- Jay Beattie. |

I broke a Shimano cartridge BB axle years ago, before I swapped to Campag. -- JS |

It was one of the early two pieces, a SweetWings crank. The shell that is the left side of the axle sheared. The failure was non-dramatic; it felt weird for about a quarter of a mile, then the left crank turned independently of the right, then fell out. A teammate gave me a push up a half mile climb, then I rode the remaining dozen miles back on my own, one legged. -- Joe Riel |

BREAKING NEWS -- BROKEN CRANK
popularrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrerk subject
note the practicalmachinist forum https://www.google.com/#q=temperatur...elease&spell=1 I had used a pinpoint propane nozzle with thick aluminum foil backing protecting seals and innards. Shimano seals are relatively heat tolerant of heat flowing thru metal and air without direct flame contact. but using a heat gun is a better idea |

I'll keep that in mind. But from the link that Gene gave, this was interesting: After heating: "Then touch a bar of Bees Wax to the joint. The stud will come out, The Bees wax will penetrate the thread and kill the loctite." Another poster in that discussion confirmed the bee's wax usefulness. Does Grant Peterson know this? He touts bee's wax as an alternative to Loctite, but doesn't mention it as an actual anti-Loctite. (I was going to call it an off-label use, but in Grant Peterson's view, nothing is off-label for bee's wax.) -- - Frank Krygowski |

Some more detail on thread locking goo removal: http://us.henkel-adhesives-blog.com/post/All-About-Threadlockers/How-to-Remove-Red-Threadlocker/ I've only broken one crank. However, I cheated. The crank had a hair line crack at the pedal threaded hole, and I broke it by jumping onto the pedal during a standing start. Since I wasn't moving at the time, all I did was land rather painfully on the top tube. -- Jeff Liebermann 150 Felker St #D http://www.LearnByDestroying.com Santa Cruz CA 95060 http://802.11junk.com Skype: JeffLiebermann AE6KS 831-336-2558 |

BREAKING NEWS -- BROKEN CRANK
https://www.google.com/#q=OLD+SAYINGS:+BEES+WAX bee's wax, whale oil, wood wood wood, .... let's there's gasket shellac and boiled linseed oil. Both give 2-3 pounds yield useful under a lock washer esp a toothed ring lockwasher. Non essential auto bolts..there are no not essential cycle bolts...in the environment are bolted down with linseed preventing rust. I did that a few minutes ago after dropping a new ratchet combo 5/16th's into the below battery area..batt tray getting linseeded bolts. Main diff tween shellac and linseed at this time (???caws I dunno ) is shellac doesn't fuzz up with dirt but lacks linseed specific gravity and rusto qualities. JB ? I unconsciously look at JB's group as not ( Brandt excepted ) using 7 year - is this a skin problem ? - old components as they all looklike junior achievers recycling aluminum at Shimano's obsolescence directives. there's more to this ride to wrk ethic than sport.... I would bet on a very hi percentage 0f 7 year old shimano racing or wannabe racing equippe showing cracks when tested: 72% I had a failed seat post from the baseline seatpost people, replacing I bought 2 as the diameter is a PITA. I was riding into Cocoa Beach, stunned by not having the post jammed into my asshole. next 10 days, rode from the rear rack. |
