9 speed rear derailleur

Since the biggest and smallest cogs aren't any farther apart on a
ten-speed cassette, what is the obstacle to using a nine-speed rear
derailleur with a ten-speed shifter, cassette, and chain? Is it the
pulleys?

Is that the reason, seriously? Or is it because they genuinely want their
customers to have the best and are terribly consevative?

2001+ 9-speed rear derailleurs are virtually the same as the 10-speed
versions (geometry and ratio is the same, AFAIK). Effective width of 10sp
pulley wheels is slightly narrower (different spacers). From memory,
difference is 0.2mm or 0.4mm.

No obstacle, just use it whether it be shimano or Campagnolo. no need to change
anything. The shifter makes sure the chain moves the correct amount these days.

That's the actual jockey wheels isn't it? I believe the spacers that fit
into them are different.

By effective width, I mean width of jockey wheel plus spacers (washers or
whatever you call them). I believe the spacers are different. The actual
jockey wheels may be the same.

2004 Veloce 9-speed total width: 8.8mm, 10-speed Veloce: 8.4mm. See

There are 8, 9, and 10sp Campag. pulleys available (source, QBP website). I
know of no 9/10sp pulleys (strange, as the new derailleurs are s'posed to be
9/10).
