Liège
The favorite tomorrow will be Fabian Cancellara, who won the last
time the Tour held a prologue in Liège. That was 2004, where as a 23 year old prodigy he came in 0.02 seconds faster than defending champion Lance Armstrong. In 1995 the stage finish in Liège was followed by a time trial and then the first Alpine stage. Everyone was bracing for those two difficult days where they hoped to minimize their losses to Indurain. Liège was supposed to be a chance for a lesser rider to grab a stage win. But instead Indurain attacked. Only Johan Bruyneel is able to stay with him. He sits in for miles before taking the win. The pace is so high that at one point Dutch rider Jeroen Blijlevens drops back to swap his wheel for one with an 11 cog. The Tour first came to Liège in 1948, where Italian legend Gino Bartali took the win. He was 34 and on his way to the win that year. He would be was the only post-war rider to win at such an advanced age until Cadel Evans did it last year. F |

His face didn't look his best at the start but at least he didn't look like hed been sucking on summat, unlike the Ozzie. Is Wiggo scant on body mass already? Was navy beans sucking on an oxygen mask? |
