I'm 48. I was also a level one rider when I was 12. I gave it up when
I was 13 b/c I was tired of the "hey can you juggle" and "is the circus
in town" remarks. I read an article on Kris Holm in the New York Times
about two years ago and convinced myself to get back on. At this age I
can easily deal with any antagonistic comments so I get out pretty
often. I'm riding at level 4 and can do most of level 5 and some of
level 6. I live in a pretty urban area so I really enjoy tricks I can
do while crossing a street or on a sidewalk -- like hopping and idling.

So you don't lose hope: stomach-on-the-seat is a lot easier for the
under 20 crowd that has a more flexible lower back. And just in case
you haven't tried this, hold onto a railing when practicing any new
trick (such as SIF). Most people will tell you that's the way to learn
to ride forwards, but they fail to tell you that you should do that for
any new skill.

I was going to call this thread "-Are you 50+-”, but I thought it might
be too lonely. Hey, there are threads for other ages, how about us more
experienced at living? And the youngings (he-he) should know about us.

I am 50 and started riding three months ago (well, I was a level one
rider when I was 12 years old). I am hooked on the one-wheel and have
almost completed level three (except for that stomach-on-the-seat
drill). I can jump mount, suicide mount, ride down a few stairs
(one-at-a-time), hop down a bunch of stairs (okay, also one-at-a-time).
I am working on idling (which, at least for me, is more difficult than
learning how to ride) and SIF (still a long way off). I have been
lurking on this forum several times a week all summer (you folks, and
youtube, taught me how to ride--thanks).

I live in Utah which is epic for my other hobbies: rock climbing,
telemark skiing, and snowboarding.

I started with a no-name 20” freestyle at the beginning of the summer,
bought a Torker 20” DX a few weeks later, and just received my KH 24”
from aebike.com three days ago (call them for prices).

How about you other riders with 45+ years of life experience?

Thanks for keeping me in mind. I would love to join in on the next

Wow! Congrats! Boy or girl?

I recently heard about a guy who is a mechanic at a bike shop in Lee or
Lenox MA (near Pittsfield) - I think it is the Acadia? shop. In the
better riding weather, this guy is supposed to lead some MUni rides on
Friday evenings. Apparently, there are some trails that start right at
the shop's back door. I heard he is a spectacular mountain biker who
got bored and now he is a spectacular MUni rider.

Actually, this would be a great halfway spot to meet up and ride.

This spring I hope to cut some mountain trails from my backyard to the
existing trails and powerline cuts. In that trail cutting time will
take away from limited riding time, it might not happen as quickly as I
would like. But if I do it, I'll have a MUni event at my house!

This sounds great, too!

Finally, there is an indoor skatepark in Springfield MA that I believe I
can rent before they open on Sunday mornings for not too much money

fun. I realize that Springfield may be a bit far for you to come just
to spend 2 hours at a skatepark, but I thought I would mention it in
the event that you have a bad case of cabin fever.

We'd have to consider it.

Girl - which is exciting because my other 3 are boys. Sons 1 and 2 are
shaping up to be fine unicycists (doing stairs, 2 ft. drops, etc). Son
#3 (age 7) is planning on being one-wheel-enabled soon.

I'll check and see when this might start up again.

I just had my (20+23)rd birthday yet I will have to wait two more years
to legitimately post in this thread...

Then again, I've seen a few posts from the 30+ crowd.

If this were the question thread, I'd end with "Will I get carded for
posting here?".

But it's not, so I'll just end here, instead.

Today I got my application in the mail for my AARP card. I turn 50 in
March. My wife says she's not old enough to be married to a member of
AARP. I figure, I'll be 50 whether I have an AARP card or not, I might
as well get the discounts too.

This is cool, I joined this site thinking it was inhabited by the
younger folk. I'm not 50 quite yet but the AARP is knocking at my
door.. I think I'm 46 cause I really stopped counting. Just ordered my
first uni a few days ago.. An LX 20. Actually, it's the first thing I
bought just fer fun in way too long... I was bidding on a yew stave on
eBay to make a sinew backed bow (I make and sell bows and arrows during
the off season when the nature preserve I manage is closed) and lost it
to a last minute sniper.. Said heck with it, and poked around to find
something utterly fun to buy and came up with a unicycle. Why not? I
get a real kick out of the young pups hee hawing about what uni to buy
at the low price cause my Trek road bike set me back a lot more than
what even a top of the line single wheel would have cost. John
