Default ANOTHER Mountain Biker Turned into a Quadriplegic!

When are mountain bikers going to get some sense????? Or is this
nature's way of telling them they are doing something very wrong?

Athlete faces toughest challenge yet after devastating accident
Alexandra Zabjek, CanwestNews Service
Published: Monday, September 08, 2008
EDMONTON - Shauna Paisley Cooper has used her strength to run, swim
and bike her way through triathlons. Now, her biggest physical
challenge is to lift her own body weight after a mountain biking
accident two months ago left her quadriplegic.

"It's the hardest stuff I've ever done," she said about her
rehabilitation at the Glenrose Hospital. "When you can't push your
weight up on the mat and you try really, really hard but you just
don't have the strength to do it that's nothing I've ever felt
before."

Shauna was mountain biking in July to prepare for a trip to British
Columbia with her husband and friends. She had spent two glorious
hours on the hill when she misjudged a three-metre jump and landed on
her head.

The 34-year-old mother of twins was wearing a helmet, but broke a
vertebra, severing her spinal cord. She has no feeling on the
underside of her arms but can move them.

A longtime outdoors enthusiast and athlete, she now draws on the
emotional and physical strengths that have always driven her as she
tried to adapt to life in a wheelchair.

Beside her for the journey is her husband, Greg Cooper, their
two-year-old daughters, Kyra and Mya, and a cluster of friends and
family who have showered them with support.

Greg, who has taken time off from his job as a pipefitter for
Petro-Canada, visits the Glenrose every afternoon.

Shauna spends part of the day going through a gruelling rehabilitation
schedule that includes physical therapy, weight training and fine
motor skill training.

In the past few weeks, she has learned to hold a pencil and utensils
using a strap that wraps around her hands. She has gained enough
strength to sit upright on her own.

Shauna's progress has been so speedy that she could be home by
mid-November. But the couple has had to put their beloved home on the
market in order to buy a more wheelchair accessible house. The
couple's friends have organized two fundraisers to help the family pay
for the changes in their lives.

"I find I'm up the majority of the time. I feel positive. But I do
feel a bit of heartbreak when I can't go home every night with the
girls," she said.

Over the past several weeks at the Glenrose, Shauna has noticed her
increased physical strength and also her increased mental strength she
does not view the changes in her life as anything more than that.

A sad, sad story for Shauna, her family & her
friends. But a wonderful story of the human
spirit. My prayers go to her & her family.

What's so wonderful about a "spirit" that rips up nature fro cheap
thrills?

My prayers go to her & her family.

My prayers are for the wildlife, who were there first.

Yeah, like YOU who chopped down and destroyed trees for your own
selfish pleasure.

Sounds like you're into that "barnyard" stuff.

What 'is' so wonderful is her spirit to overcome
the her injuries.

My prayers go to her & her family.

Somehow, I suspect that you don't pray.

You don't understand nature very well do you? If
they move the mountain bike trail over 100 or so,
in a few years nature will reclaim that old trail
& it will be over grown again. No trace.

Mike has very little scientific wisdom or experience under his belt.
His doctorate degree is in dietary sciences...he's a chef basically.
He works for a business that destroys nature in the name of
technology. His indian name would be "one-trac" because he has only a
one trac mind in regards to a subject. It isn't about preservation of
nature as a whole so much as a personal issue about mtbers. And he was
a MTBer at one time himself as he admits to riding one...by mike's
limited aspect of logic...that makes him a mtber. And recently he has
revealed that in the past, he was a tree-cutter, lumberjack,
logger...whatever you wish to call it. He detroyed trees to make a
"fort" until he got stung by a bee...too bad natural selection slipped
and the vespid allergy was out to lunch that day. mike also flies in
an airplane and has dumped countless excess contaminates from these
trips into our atmosphere...

He has no real ecological, scientific, chemical...biological or
molecular basis for any of his reviews. In short. He is a troll and a
hypocrite.

I hope he's not posting from work again or using their address for op-
ed pieces.

Do a web and newsgroups search with these terms in various
combinations "Mike Vandeman", "kook", "nutcase", "mental illness",
liar", "fraud", "loser", "sociopath". Then make your decision on the
type of person mikey is versus the person he pretends and claims to
be.

You forgot COWARD and THIEF, he hides at his workplace surfing the net
instead of earning his paycheck. Instead of getting outdoors
enjoying nature or having an interest which provides interacting with
people in a positive manner. He pretends he is something that he
isn't and trolls newsgroups to have interaction with people even
though it is unhealthy interaction.
