Default value of a cyclist's life

We were aghast last autumn when a suburban Chicago judge
fined a driver $150 for killing a cyclist walking her bike
in a crosswalk. The bar is now lower, only 80 GBP:

You would think that in a country that is actively pro-cyclist that they would have taken a lot more interest in bicyclists safety. Why couldn't she have slid over and taken the curbside door? Taxi's are designed for that sort of thing.

You are correct, of course. In fact, the transport secretary himself teaches
*free* civics & cycling safety classes:

There are certain advantages to the US ability to sue hell out of people that do those sorts of things.

Drunk, 60 mph on a 30 mph city street, driving home from a bar, works for www.allyoucandrink.com (bar review site), several drunk driving arrests bartered down to hefty fines, 10 days in jail, the minimum required by law. https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/2017...clist-clybourn

Life everywhere today seems to be really cheap. Not bicycling but how about a 13 year old boy buying a semi-automatic handgun for protection and then accidently" shooting and killing a 14 year old girl and he gets "TORONTO — A teenage boy will have to serve six months in open custody and nearly a year on probation in the death of a 14-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet in northwest Toronto nearly two years ago."?

Whether a car or a gun in Canada, you can get away with murder with hardly any punishment these days.

Cheers

In the USA it is ZERO punishment. Not this "hardly any" you speak of in Canada.

That's not true. We convict them around he http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/i...uana_when.html

It looks like six years is the standard sentence for manslaughter. The US is a big place, and prosecutions are local. There are a lot of locales in the US. Drivers probably get a medal in Florida, just ask Gene.

It would seem logical to allow the pre-payment of the 80 quid. Then
one could kill a cyclist at one's leisure rather then to have to
suffer the bother of having to attending court and so on.

I could even see a lottery system with the profits used to build bike
lanes and MUPs.

(If them cyclers want private roads, let them fund them!)
