There is a photo of Antonin Magne in what was probably either the 1931
or 1934 Tour in which one of his handlebar mounted water bottles has
"Cafe Sanka" on it. In-as-much-as Geminiani his credited with
bringing in the first extra-sportive sponsor (Nivea), can anyone
confirm that this was a Tour sponsor, much like Coca Cola recently?
Does anyone know of a compendium of sponsorship for the Tour by year?

I had no idea that crap was around so long ago.

more info (about sanka history, not about the question of their
sponsorship):
"Dr. Ludwig Roselius' scientific ingenuity led to the creation of
decaffeinated coffee. For years, Roselius searched for a way to remove
caffeine from coffee without diluting the flavorful taste and aroma. In
1903, Roselius and his team of researchers were given the opportunity to
implement new techniques, using brine-soaked coffee beans that had been
plunged into the sea during a storm. Roselius and his team discovered
that a brine-soaked bean reacted differently to roasting and within a
few years developed a technique that removed 97 percent of the caffeine
without removing the flavor. A patent was issued for this process in
Germany in 1906.

A few years ago, i heard a story on NPR about the decaffeinating process. The
reporter was in a building in Central America where it was done, and said there
was a fog of caffeine in the air. Enormous piles of the stuff... I believe they
sell it to the people who make aspirin.

Default 1930s Sponsorship Question

who's got time for a coffee ritual like that???? (that's a rhetorical
question, BTW) Back in the day when men were men and women appreciated
it, people didn't have time for that sort of nonsense. Gourmet coffee
and 'coffee snobs' are at the heart of the current decline in
civilization.

I don't care what you say, I'm not going to prove I'm a man by drinking
Budweiser.

**** Folgers! Have you ever had Starbuck's coffee? There's a reason why
they are on every corner, and it's not brainwashing...

i love decaf coffee! do you buy quality decaf in small quantities (no
more than a week's worth) in whole bean form and grind it right before

Decaf coffee is a myth.
It's like donuts without holes.

Just outside New Orleans on the way to Fort Pike, there is (perhaps was) a
Folgers roasting plant. The smell of good coffee roasting is, IMO, one of
life's little pleasures. However, the stench from the Folgers plant was
awful.

How DO you propose to prove you're a man, if not by drinking Bud?

uhhh,... yes it is (well, actually it's just really good marketing) If
Starbucks is so good, how come Dunkin Doughnuts still sells more coffee
than they do??? (alert: rhetorical) Who said anything about Folgers?
If you want good coffee, you gotta go with Peet's.

For the same reason so many people post from Google Groups.
