5 WAYS EUROPEANS LIVE BETTER THAN AMERICNS

Europeans clearly do things differently from us. Yet their ‘smaller’ lives seem in many ways richer and fuller. I’ve begun to notice some of those differences that we might do well to consider. Here are five that really struck me:

1. Europeans walk and bike more. Whether in crowded cities like Rome or Budapest, or centuries-old rural villages, more people get around on their own power in Europe. It’s easier than negotiating jammed streets, finding scarce parking and paying twice as much for a gallon for gas. Age has nothing to do with it: You’re as likely to see a wrinkled grandmother toting a wheeled market cart or pedaling her cruiser, a bouquet of baguettes in the handlebar basket, as you are more youthful cyclists, who may be wearing an Armani business suit, or a leopard blouse and platforms, like a couple of stylish Roman commuters I watched pedal down the via Nomentana.

Freedom is the ability to choose. No choice = no freedom. No differences = no
choices. Thank goodness the USA and Europe differ. If you prefer Europe go
there but do not attempt to impress your choice on America or vice versa.. That
is evil. Shades of Hitler and Stalin!

Get your buddies together and go take over the nearest interstate by riding your
bicycles in the fast lane. Let us know how that works.

You are the one that pushes the car as the only option.

That's fascism. ?

You are disingenuous. I never "push' cars let alone as the only option. Fact
is I currently don't even own one. My logic is simple. If I catch somebody
robbing my house I shoot him. Riding a bicycle at 10 mph on a 40 mph road that
I and others paid for so that we could get places quickly is the same as theft.
If you want to ride a horse or bicycle or walk feel free to do so but stay off
the roads intended for motorized vehicles. And if you prefer Europe or Timbuktu
go there - do not try to bring there here. That's fascism.

It's like I say: "Nothing free in the land of the free."

It's a nation of consumers. The last free Americans were the Indians.

That is a joke. All primitive societies have laws, and strangely
enough they usually resemble the Jewish 10 Commandments. It is rather
simple minded to think differently. Granted the "laws" apply only to
the members of the tribe but apparently that was also true for the
Israelites.

However you go around the world promoting "freedom" and "democracy." What a joke.

Well, what would you have promoted? High taxes, high medical costs?
Exorbitant school costs? The Communists had the "dictatorship of the
proletariat", the U.S. have "democracy and freedom". All this proves
is that politicians lie. Or perhaps more accurately"people that want
what you have will lie to get it".

But what is the alternate?

In one word, the alternative is: The Netherlands. Not only because of cycling but because of tolerance.

The Netherlands? tolerance? don't be silly. the Dutch are no different
than any other race of people. Some are tolerant and some are not.

But for official Dutch tolerance you might visit Indonesia. There are
still people there who can remember the Dutch. Ask them about Dutch
tolerance.

FREEDOM OF MOBILITY is more important than the right to bear arms. In any case, Iraq is a better model of the latter.

What ever are you talking about "freedom of mobility". Do you mean the
freedom to drive up to Daytona Beach? The freedom to hitchhike across
the U.S.? Maybe the freedom to just get up and leave? Move to
Ethiopia?

As for bearing arms, the U.S. is probably the best example of the
freedom to bear arms. There are very few countries in the world that
actually issue a permit to carry a concealed firearm, while all U.S.
states now do so, I believe.

Used copy, paperback, $50+ at Amazon. Ironic?

Like the $99 Financial Freedom class—only people who don't need it can
afford it. And people who can afford it are smart enough to realize
they don't need it. One hopes.

Amazon offers a preview of many pages. Boo! TWO chapters on credit and
borrowing. Sure there are smarter ways to do either, but far better
advice is DON'T do either!

He did have one interesting idea, though. Many pundits advise budgeting
by category: this much for food, this much for play, etc. That is too
complicated for some people. He offered the alternative of budgeting by
time: so much per day or week.

There's one virtue in lending. If there's a guy you'd prefer

Yow! Heavily ironic!

ABE Books, my favorite source, has one for $48 and one for $123. Too
bad I didn't keep my copy!

American men affirm their masculinity by driving an SUV, but I don't think that's what she wants.

What she wants is a man that wears a love charm and knows some exotic position. "Banana Power!"

I can supply European men with such charms and more. No SUV necessary. Not even a Harley Davidson. I think it's Jesus that tamed European men.

You claim American men depend on SUVs. Harleys, et cetera. But guess what,
women drive SUVs and ride Harleys too -

Masculine ladies surely. "Ladies with balls" so to speak.

SUVs because they are roomy, safe and
practical; Harleys because they are fun. Certainly not because it makes them
more masculine. Moreover, unless you are her, you haven't a clue what Thranholm
considers masculine and I doubt it has much to do with "charms" or sexual
positions. Your belief that it does, combined with your obcession with bicycles
suggests that you have real masculinity problems.

The bicycle puts my tall athletic physique in full display for the ladies to enjoy. The slowness and the sweating add to the appeal.

The Harley goes too fast for the ladies to enjoy. And, of course, no sweating.

A book dealer I know explained to me how this happens:

Dealer gets a book. Looks online to see what it's going for. Doesn't
find it, assumes it's rare, and puts a high price on it. Next dealer
gets a copy, looks online, sees the high price, and offers a little
less. If enough copies are available, it eventually gets done to
peanuts. But the high listings stick around even if some fool buys them.

If there aren't many copies, they also stick around, bought or not.

I once loaned a bloke $100... back when I was a one striper in the Air
force and a hundred bucks was almost a month's pay. Never heard from
him again, until nearly 10 years I was walking down the road on
Enewetak Atoll and met him. When I greeted him he said, "Do I know
you?"
