Helmet usage, if you wear one
Here's a good helmet to leave on, when you're off the bike on a hot day: beat the heat with a refrigerated helmet ... Link:

Helmet usage, if you wear one

Sometimes I don't bother to take my hat off, sometimes I take off just the hat; if sweating heavily I'll take off both hard hat and do-rag. I used to have to wear a hat in the local grocery, but one day I came in and there was a sign up apologizing for the "dim" light for "green" purposes; ever since I've been able to see in there without shades. I suppose the old light was great for un-corrected myopics. Some of my riding buddies leave them on when we stop for water or whatever at the convenient stores. Probably to keep the sweat from dripping on the floor. Some, like myself, wear a cycling cap underneath and leave the helmet on the bike. Now that you mention it, I am putting myself at considerable risk since I'm turning into a pedestrian at that moment. lol Yeah, I guess they just don't want to leave the helmet on the bike... although honestly who's going to steal a used helmet? Some people will steal anything though... Honestly I would guess they just forget they're wearing it. My habit is to hang it on my bike and drop my gloves in it. I used to hang it on the handlebar end till it fell one day and cracked the visor. Found out no replacement visor for my model anymore. Superglued it. Then used JB Weld when that failed. I clip mine on the handlebar by the front bike stem now so can't fall off. When I lock the bike, I put the strap through the ubolt and lock it. Someone could cut the straps, but I don't think anyone will. People will definitely cut the straps on moto lids. I could see it easily happening to a bicycle lid - not for theft, just vandalism. -- T0m $herm@n |

Indeed... haven't been on a bike since last week (Thursday or Friday I think?) because of the temps outside. Praying for rain/some kind of front/any kind of break in this weather. 95F temps and high humidity = I can barely think straight outside much less do anything involving exertion. I was shampooing the seats in a car on Sunday and spent more time taking breaks and drinking water than I did working. In these conditions it is miserable even on an infernal combustion powered two-wheeler at 70 mph - no wonder people in the southeast US are crazy. Makes me wish my company would open an office in Superior/Duluth. -- T0m $herm@n |

Growing up in NOLA I sort of doubt that you ever get really acclimated to heat and humidity. I think you just drink lots of vodka tonics and slow things down. I've never really got acclimated to it and I lived there before we had much AC. I would rather live in Quebec City (BTDT) than NOLA - even -40° F/C is OK with proper gear. -- T0m $herm@n |

I think they just want one less thing to carry in their hands. When it's hot, I take mine off as soon as I can. 90s and humid here lately. Killing me. Can one die from exposure to too much humidity? YES! It's called heat stroke and occurs when the body can no longer cool itself to about 37C. High humidity interferes with water evaporation due to the surrounding air being nearly or saturated with moisture. Thus you sweat but the sweat doesn't evaporate and cool you. Cheers Indeed... haven't been on a bike since last week (Thursday or Friday I think?) because of the temps outside. A behind the dashboard adventure with a radio and speaker (the usual= upside down, can't see anything, hands just won't fit, etc) proved to be daunting with a mixture of dirt and sweat in my eyes. Riding is fine but inside a car there's no airflow. Try augering holes by hand on a hot, humid day with no wind or shade. Did 18 holes to 4 feet deep by doing 3 at a time, then sitting in the truck with the A/C running full blast drinking Gatorade, then repeating. -- T0m $herm@n |

Lost 2 MC helmets that way. yikes. I have that fear, but I try to leave it in a public place where there is foot traffic and so far have never lost one... Someone did steal my bike pump once. Zefal XL double pump that fit very nicely to my frame. I miss that pump... I didn't even notice it was stolen for a while till one day, I realized it wasn't on my bike anymore. I bought a cheaper Zefal, and have not had any steal this one, even though it is more noticeable. I used to carry it with me when I locked it, but forgot a few times and no one stole it, so the last few years just leave it. I used take my helmet with me too but it seems safe enough here if I put it through the u-bolt. If it is a sketchy area, I take the helmet with me. |
