Default Cyclist assaulted in Sheffield

Long-term subscribers to this list may recall the case in December 2005
where a cyclist was assaulted in Sheffield. The victim reported the case
via the CTC forum when looking for advice as to how to proceed, and it
got forwarded amongst the various cycling fora. A number of posters on
this list suggested that this incident did not ring true and must have
been made up.

The case has now come to court and was reported in the Sheffield Star
on April 27th. A scan is available at
http://www.pedalpushers.org.uk/resources/star.gif
and back issues are available from the Star offices at
York Street, Sheffield, S1 1PU, 0114 276 7676

I trust therefore that the posters who alleged that this story had been
fabricated will now recognise that they were wrong and apologise for the
distress they have caused to the victim, his family and friends.

I'm a little shocked that such a deliberate assult didn't get
a custodial scentence.

I don't understand why the sentence was so lenient. The guy is clearly a nutjob
and should've been locked up either in prison for 6 months-1 year or put in a
mental institution

I read an article the the other day about someone who got beaten to the
point where they were brain damaged, couldn't work etc, and the perpetraitor
got 9 months or so. The sentence is lenient because the government do not
give a flying ****.

To put things in perspective, I've just been doing some reading about access
and paths etc. The people who were up in court for the Kinder Tresspass got
6 months, and I doubt you got out in 3 for good behaviour in the thirties.

As for keeping his driving licence - if he'd have threatened someone with a
gun he wouldn't be keeping his firearms licence.

All I can think of is that he made it clear he was terribly middle class
and wouldn't do it again.

I remember it being brought up, I remember thinking that it sounded
incredible. I've just had a quick re-read of the original thread, and yes
there were one or two who voiced an opinion of whether this was fact or
fiction. Then someone posted that he knew the bloke and correlated the
story.

The whole point was this story did sound *incredible*. (Definition: So
implausible as to elicit disbelief).

It was a terrible incident, and my best wishes to Andrew. The courts
decision was insulting based on the crime. I'm not really sure how these
weekly payments are to be made, but the victim will now have to have some
sort of contact with the *criminal* for the next five years. Disgraceful.

Yebbut our entire civilisation is based on the respect for land and
property. It is these two things that must be protected above all others
lest we descend into anarchy.

They were charged with "rioutous assembly and assualt". The gamekeeper who
got beaten up could walk back to Hayfield, so it was nothing of this
magnitude.

Besides, the respect for land and property goes hand in hand with respect to
other people. I don't think it's possible to respect someone and then steal
from them.
