I seem to be missing the significance of this.


That's your sword arm. Well, unless you're a pinko lefty.


That's part of it. But it also means that dismounted cyclists cross
paths with others with their bikes between them, which is a useful
defensive measure when in a nasty bit of town.

The bike, however, should not be on your sword arm, but on the other. Some
smudging from the chain is a small price to pay for a) not smudging other,
perhaps highly strung individuals and b) having your sword/knife/gun arm
free, at least iin potentia/i making assailants think twice before
assaulting you (even if you carry none of those items).
