Default Tax break for cycling commuters

Just spotted this in a US mag (hey, Im the boss!)

"The Bicycle Commuter Act would allow an employer to offer a monthl
cash reimbursement to an employee who commutes to work by bicycle
providing a tax benefit to the employer and helping defray commutin
expenses for the bicyclist."

I have an idea that in Aus - employer could give allowance to employee
payment would be tax deductable expense for employer BUT employee woul
treat the payment as taxable income and pay tax on it at marginal rate

On 2005-08-05, flyingdutch (aka Bruce)
was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea:

The good thing about being US's bitch, is that we'll hopefully pass
the same law.

Nope, will never happen.

POSTING ERROR: Not cynical enough!

May George W keep falling off his bike then, and his little
Aussie deputy take up cycling!

There are several places that allow such for cycling and using public
transport. In Australia it is a fringe benefit and causes a nightmare
for companies to do.

There is another way - encourage your employer to provide secure bik
parking, shower and change facilities (like mine). A simple laundr
would also be nice (hint hint).

The costs associated with providing and maintaining bike friendl
infrastructure _is_ a deductable expense for companies (so the gov
subsidy is the company tax rate: 30% isn't it?) It would be even nice
if the government provided further tax incentives for employers t
provide services to its employees, but I think it would be complex
expensive and ultimately open to abuse (sadly).

There is no specific statute that I am aware. However, companies carr
on business using buildings, which they own or lease. Maintenance is
business expense as is depreciation. I know my employer will b
depreciating the two extra showers it installed in response to employe
wishes...

At least the company gets it for 30% less than the punter in th
street...

FD, I don't know if you have a home-based business or use othe

own business. own the premises in CBD.

and no, the only reason we have accountants is bcos some people thin
things in this world are only worthy of consideration if it can b
measured or put into sad little excel spreadsheets.

Oh, and to make speedhumps... :rolleyes
