Why do you suppose people like Frank or John post here other than to argue with anything and everything? Chalo obviously takes his que from Frank and we have Jay showing us a picture of a cap head screw and you have to wonder if he has even bothered to follow the discussion at all.

To Frank and Jay and Chalo the manufacturers of bicycle components are idiots and they could do a much better job with a screwdriver and a piece of modeling clay. Who the hell knows what John thinks since he changes every posting. I stopped reading his entries long ago if they have more than one sentence.

Joerg has grown tires of the BD so we see very little of him any more much to the loss of the group. Andre spends all of his time laughing at the stupids.

Ridesalot seems to be a switch-hitter though that could simply be a sign of confusion. The rest of those that post here actually want real discussions but are soon overwhelmed by the Frank, Jay and John show. More's the sad problem since it is destructive of the point for this group.

Right! And than we have Good Old Tom who apparently posts here to
demonstrate his vast ignorance. And who is now whining because various
inhabitants here have, from time to time, pointed out some of his more
outrageous claims as being pure imagination.

It might even be of interest to note that Good Old Tom has developed
an innovative technique. When someone points out that one of his wild
eyed claims is utter foolishness, he just changes the subject.

Tell us how many Carbon Fiber high end bikes and group sets you have. Or have ever owned?

Ah, my point exactly.

The discussion was about Old Tom demonstrating his ignorance, whining,
and changing the subject when anyone points out that one of his wild
eyed claims is utter foolishness.

And he replies, "Tell us how many Carbon Fiber high end bikes and
group sets you have".

Tom very much reminds me of an old guy who signed up for casual work at a
vacation youth camp consellor. Absolutely no relevant background, but he
had undertaken all the compulsory basic training and so entered the
roster as C-in-training.

First he distinguished himself by going for a lie down every afternoon,
but would be fresh for the evening when he regaled us with his endless
stories of "delivering" various sailing yachts through out the globe.

As the guy in charge quietly said to me one night; "have you ever
wondered why wih all that claimed great sailing experience, all his trips
ended in disaster". Tom's stories are like that; saltory remnders of what
no to do.

For all my irrelevance I've made a million a couple of times and am presently again worth a million. Tell us all what you're worth? Or maybe I should re-phrase that - what anyone would give for you?

So, you are worth a million dollars? Of which the house that your
mother gave you is, you claim, worth $600,000.

Which would seem to indicate that in a long working life you have been
able to accumulate something like $400,000 in addition to what your
mother gave you.

And, of course you brag about it :-(

Good! Things must be looking up for you! I notice you haven't complained
about your grocery bills for several weeks now.

It is relly sad that your own measure of worth is in $$$$. That you have
no other measure of your worth and yor impact throughout your life.

I've never summed how much income I've had over my life as it indicates
nothing. I'd prefer to remember the thousands of peope I've helped lead a
better life and to whom I've passed on my skills and values.

Further, I have no interest in exploring "what anyone would give for you"
as I have no need for anyone to give me anything. I structured my life
over forty years ago so that I could step off that circular treadmill of
employment and purchasing and implied feelng of inadequacy that soe many
people seem to need in their life as a justification.

In the Bay Area, being "worth a million" is of little consequence.

If you've owned even a modest house, for a decade or more, your net
worth, inclusive of equity in your house, is probably at least $1
million. And these aren't mansions!

Some people do cash out when they retire. They move to other areas with
much lower housing costs, and live off the proceeds from the sale of
their California real estate (or they move to a more rural part of
California).

We have a lot of house-rich, cash-poor seniors in this area. But because
of Prop. 13 they don't want to sell their house, they want to pass on
the low assessed value to their heirs. The unintended side effect is low
turnover of single family homes, so young families end up moving to more
distant communities and commuting if they want to buy a house.

Having a million between your retirement account and your house is pretty pitiful living in California. Just the rumpus room in SMS's Cupertino ranch house is worth $1M. In my ancestral home of Los Gatos, $1M will get you a dinner out with drinks but no desert. Maybe in Panama $1M means something -- but not in Cali. People spend that much on teeth whitening.

-- Jay Beattie.

Then by all means come down here and live. You'll have the same homelessness and the same inflation as Portland and you'll get to live in a nice place in Los Gatos if you believe that that is now a nice safe place to live at the bottom of a worn out dam.
