Proximity to immediate help; proximity to medical care. You can get many chances to die in a place like that. You don't have to spend a lot of time examining New Yorkers to see that huffing exhaust is bad for you. If you're from a less car-infested place, you can't fail to notice. Obviously New York City in 1900 didn't have just as good proximity to care as they do now. (Eyes rolling). In case you missed it, New York City is the center of the news media universe. They don't appear very sickly in physical health. |

Proximity to immediate help; proximity to medical care. You can get many chances to die in a place like that. Even simpler: public clean drinking water and sanitation systems. Yes it's a form of collectivist socialism but it actually works. Water service and sewers made a huge difference. You don't have to spend a lot of time examining New Yorkers to see that huffing exhaust is bad for you. If you're from a less car-infested place, you can't fail to notice. There's a ton of research on the deleterious effects of city life on physical and mental health. But it is where the majority of humans live these days; other factors provide some compensation. |

The smog was ten times worse in LA. You HAD to travel by car there. From Riverside you could see that black cloud hovering above the horizon. But although that does cause certain ailments in people that are sensitive to that, the average age of death in LA was no different than it was in Seattle which at the time was one of the hallmarks of a pristine environment. |

Roosters are just herd critters and fighting chickens are just trying to keep others away from THEIR flock :-) -- Cheers, John B. |
