An evening of Strauss from Vienna
I am having great pleasure in watching the New Years Day concert from
Vienna. It is something of a personal tradition with me and over many years has given me a huge amount of pleasure. A couple of glasses of red wine and now a large port and brandy is finishing off my Christmastide celebration. Obviously full of the Strauss "dynasty" music, Today was a good morning to ride as well and i did abour 26 kms in cold but fairly calm conditions leaving home at 0745 with all my lights on! I hope to do it tomorrow morning too but there is a hint of a bit more snow or sleet which might defrost some of my off road. track route which today was crisp and hard. Today is also the last day of overindulgence and a return to severe rationaing!. Although I still have a couple of pheasants and a remaining wild duck in the freezer and half a dozen quail -- oh yes a 2 partridge which I found today while digging out some "Welsh Dragon Sausages" It is also easier to increase the waist line than to regain that slimer look!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- From Trevor A Panther In South Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom www.tapan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |

A couple of glasses of red wine and now a large port and brandy is finishing off my Christmastide celebration. Obviously full of the Strauss "dynasty" music, I know you like your wine. Between 1985 and April 1993 I was a wine merchant, manager of a large wine shop in Greenwich called Bottoms Up. At some stage, and I cannot recall the date, Bottoms Up were bought by Thresher. They used to run an anual blind tasing competition. In September 1992 I won the regional heat and then national competition. In April 1993 I was sacked. I took Thresher to an industrial tribunal who found that they had sacked me because sales had fallen following the lifting of duty allowances between the EU and the UK on 1 January 1993. I was awarded £9,000 compensation (£10,000 was the maximum that could have been awarded at the time). Being at a loose end I decided to further my education and took A levels in English and Maths. A year later I unexpectedly found myself reading mathematics and education at Cambridge University. While at Cambridge I was president of the Wine Society for the last three of my four years (www.srcf.ucam.org/cuws/), and on the CU Wine Tasing Team for all four years. Today was a good morning to ride as well and i did abour 26 kms in cold but fairly calm conditions leaving home at 0745 with all my lights on! I cyclied today in a peloton of 11 to Erith, about 15 miles from home. We went to a greasy spoon, about the only place open in Erith toady, and then 9 of the peloton cycled back to Greenwich. I continued with a friend to Dartford where a surly traffic patrol officer conveyed us through the Dartford Tunnel. From there we cycled to Beckton and then re-crossed the Thames using the Woolwich Ferry before returning home. 50 miles in glorious sunshine. I hope to do it tomorrow morning too but there is a hint of a bit more snow or sleet which might defrost some of my off road. track route which today was crisp and hard. I am probably going to cycle along the Lea Valley tomorrow. I'd quite like to go as far as Cambridge, but we shall see... I have managed to lose 8lbs over the past two weeks. I need to lose a lot more than that to return to a respectable weight. |

If you postponed your foray to Cambridge until Sunday, and then continininininued your ride a few miles to the northeast, you could join the Burwell Cyclists in their third Monthly Ride. Indications this afternoon, while taking tea with the rest of the Committee, were that I'd be all on my own again. Wimps! Mike -- Mike Causer |

Along the Lea Valley (NCR1), and then NCR11 it is probably more like 70 miles, most of it motor traffic free, i.e. slow going. If I leave home at 6am, expect me at ten to three at Grantchester Meadows; and is there honey still for tea? |

Myself I'd go into one of the two fairly decent pubs in Grantchester (as of 20 years ago, dunno how they are now). However the Good News follows. Temperature 30 minutes short of midnight in Cambridgeshire is 2 degrees C above freezing. So as long as the cloud doesn't clear you should stay upright [1] from London to Cambridge. Or do you really have such a complex that you need to waffle on about yourself? |
