After this it looks like new. Is this nonsense? The nonsensical part is not that ti and steel can be rubbed off, but that it's relevant to what bike cages do to bottles. Bottles are not sandpaper or scrotchbrite or metal files or hacksaws.- Tekst uit oorspronkelijk bericht niet weergeven - - Tekst uit oorspronkelijk bericht weergeven - When riding in the rain, sand gets between the bottle and the cage. The bottle and the cage, any cage, get scratched leaving marks and metal particles on the bottle. That's what I meant. Ever pulled a bottle out of the cage when riding in the rain or off road? How did it sound? Lou |

\ Thanks, but those plastic button thingies make the whole assembly look horribly inelegant compared to the classic design, IMO. You're wrong. The buttons _are_ the classic design. Widely copied. They are functional, they give a firmer hold on the bottle. |

I didn't notice them until more recent years, and I've been around road bikes since the early '80s. If there was a classic style, I'd say it was the handlebar bottle holders seen on a lot of old bike photos the mid-20th century. |

Have to give you credit for being succinct and to the point :-) Usually "IMO" buys some immunity from that kind of response, but I understand. The buttons _are_ the classic design. Um, okay - if you say so. I could be wrong. I don't have extensive experience with bottle cages in all their various forms. I guess I was thinking of "classic" as... well, sort of as Merriam-Webster: "1 a: serving as a standard of excellence : of recognized value classic literary works b: traditional , enduring classic designs c: characterized by simple tailored lines in fashion year after year a classic suit" In any case, the Novara 'N' logos don't say "classic" to me; they scream, "yuppie membership sporting goods department store". Widely copied. They are functional, they give a firmer hold on the bottle. They had better be functional, otherwise why would the designer dork up their elegance with buttons like that :-) I'm thinking of one bike in particular that I see around here. It's a perfectly ordinary, semi-high-end Italian road bike, but for me it just doesn't exude elegance. When reflecting on this perceived lack of elegance I keep noticing the (yellow) plastic buttons on the bottle cage. Could be just me. Aesthetic taste is a peculiar thing. Come to think of it, though, those buttons would probably at least reduce pressure of the metal rail against the plastic bottle - maybe even keep it out of contact entirely - which could substantially address my original complaint. Something to consider. Thanks! Sorry if I appeared to ridicule your advice. You ridiculed the notion that I had to save up money for stainless steel cages. and I guess maybe I took a little offense. I'm not terribly poor, nor am I abundantly wealthy. Upgrading bottle cages would definitely have to be done with extra money. Every bike related purchase needs to be well rationalized and prioritized. Last night I *did* place an order with Performance, but I didn't get the nice SS bottles - even on sale at $20 the pair. I wanted to, but I don't *need* them. Instead, I cut the order off at one pair of arm warmers and one pair of toe covers. (Mornings are getting colder.) |
