Abut 80% of people in ICU experience delirium, which is what she is
describing from that time. Many of those folks have some PTSD from the delirium itself, in addition to whatever emotional aftereffects of the trauma or illness put them in the hospital. ICU docs and nurses know about this and try to help the patient and their family understand what's going on. It's called "ICU-itis" at the hospital I was at. That she has recovered as well as she has is inspiring, and there's a prety good chance that things will get better. Recovery from that level of truma can take years. It's also a reminder- be careful out there. Far too many people are quite happy to endanger your life so they can get home two minutes faster. If they even notice you in the first place. |
