Default Freedom of Information - Segway

I have just seen that the Department for Transport has released
biggish files of information on communications with it regarding the
Segway following a Freedom of Information request. There appears to be
lots of lobbying and requests from constituents and Segway to permit
the vehicles to be used on pavements and bike lanes. And pretty solid
stonewalling from DfT (supported by ACPO) to not bother with changing
legislation. But somewhere there is a comment of a request to police
forces not to prosecute Segway users if they are behaving responsibly.

For once the DfT had it right. How could they possibly prosecute cyclists
for riding on the footpath if they have approved fitness-challenged people
from riding a Segway on the footpath, posing a greater danger to
pedestrians?

Of course, if the exercise averse Segway riders were riding along Brighton
seafront, they could be prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.

I have only ever seen one Segway in the UK, on the psychlepaths round
Hyde Park. The rider did not look to be disabled and was certainly
not obese. Of course, he was disadvantaged by looking like a complete
knob, but as a lycra-user I can't really diss him for that.

You mean like someone on an "arse on the ground bike" (recumbent)?

I must admit I have seen some photos of right knobs on such things.

Guy Chapman nym-shifted to Lou Knee in order to call someone a ****.
He was caught out by the evidence of the IP address he used.
He has "implied" that it was not himself - but refuses to answer the simple question:
"Guy Chapman: Did you make the Lou Knee post?"
He is despicable - on this evidence you should not believe *anything* he says.

"Diss"? Wow, middle-aged freak-blob Crapman's really down with the
kids. Just like his daddy was.

I wonder whether the car-haters would hate Segways or not if they took
off? I think they probably would, since they are powered private
transport, and that's what the car-haters object to.

Mind you, I don't see a problem with Segways using cycle lanes since
cyclists never use them.

i've seen them used around kingston upon thames, saw one on the bike
path from hampton court and going over kingston bridge, but they are far
from the oddest things you see, such as speedwalkers and a bike that you
press on the foot plates to move and all sorts of odd things, some times
there are even people just walking along but thats fairly rare...

So have I. It took some will power not to laugh at the operator.

I've only seen one, used by a musical roady with a very bad limp. He
definately had a physical handica. He was using it to get around the
arena where the concert was to be held. It actually make sense. I
don't know if he used it outside of the building.

Well, I've ridden (?) one. They are great fun, but I can't really see
the point of them. I wouldn't want them on the pavements; the Segway
is too wide and fast to mix comfortably with pedestrians. I'd be
happier with them on the roads, but no doubt some of our more
challenged drivers would struggle to cope.

I'll stick to foot, bike, train and car.
