That's a problem even in places where winter nights are only 14 hours long. Lights are so cheap there is no excuse to not have lights. This will partially solve itself with fashion lights, i.e., spoke lights for every spoke, etc. The other night I saw a skate board with brilliant green wheels. On top of that just about every culture likes bright colored cloths. The endless innovation of the apparel, LED and photo voltaic industries will without doubt eventually produce a popular fabric that is luminescent for hours if not forever. Unless you are over weight it looks ok to glow in the dark. Bret Cahill |

... http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...-police-147907 "This story wins the prize for most ridiculous statistic of the day. Of course 89% of riders stopped didn't have adequate lights: they presumably weren't stopping the ones who DID have adequate lights.." Err... and how come that of the people stopped for not having lights only 89% didn't have lights? So what kind of non-lamp lamps were the 11% carrying? Perhaps they had seen a recommendation for Poundland on this forum. |

Perhaps they had seen a recommendation for Poundland on this forum. QUOTE: Thames Valley Police have said that around 89% of riders they stopped on a given night in Oxford weren’t equipped with the necessary bike lights, as the crackdown continues on cyclists riding with poor visibility in the city. ENDQUOTE As long as you have the advantage of a reasonable command and comprehension of the English language, there is no difficulty with that part of the story. Just bear in mind that the writer does not state that the cyclists were stopped for having no lights. They might have been stopped for going through red traffic lights, for instance, or for cycling along pedestrian footways. Or, slightly more to the point, they might have been stopped for not displaying lights, with 11% of those so stopped actually having lights on their bikes but not - for some reason - using them. Is there a separate offence of having no lights as well as one of not using them? |

Perhaps their lights didn't cost more than most bicycles and the owners therefore were not proper cyclists |

If you read the actual TVP press release, you will find that the police were stopping cyclists for safety checks, one of which was for lights: http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/ne....htm?id=296474 |
