Default Royal Parks to restrict motor traffic indefinitely in cycling hotspots

Good news!
QUOTE:
The Royal Parks is to implement a new Movement Strategy that will restrict the amount of motor traffic through green spaces such as Richmond Park and Bushy Park, which have long-served as a destination for cyclists across London.

The new movement strategy will see trial projects that will implement the following:

A full time closure of the North Carriage Drive and South Carriage Drive to motor traffic in Hyde Park
A trial scheme to reduce motor through-traffic in Richmond Park, with details yet to be set out
A part closure of Bushy Park roads that will allow access to car parks but prohibit movement between the park gates
Full time closure of the Avenue in Greenwich Park to motor traffic

Most of these measures will effectively be continuations (and in places minor relaxations) of current restrictions to motor traffic implemented during the coronavirus lockdown. These measures have been met with vigorous approval from many park users, not solely cyclists.

Prior to Covid-19, 89% of respondents (! -SM) to a consultation on movement in the parks stated a preference to see less through-traffic in the parks. The Royal Parks’ own studies in Richmond Park reveal that the majority of traffic in normal times is through-traffic.

Richmond Park typically suffered from considerable vehicle traffic before Covid-19

Cyclists have certainly benefited from restrictions on vehicle traffic in Richmond and Bushy Parks, but The Royal Parks' focus now appears to be on taking measures to promote more considerate behaviour amongst cyclists.

I hope they succeed.

But experience doesn't make one too hopeful.
