Its not clear how the lift engages with the shoe, any ideas?

You step onto one of the 'rungs' of the lift as it approaches and lean
forwards a bit. Kind of like standing with one leg on an escalator, where
your other leg has wheels, or a bit like using a T-bar ski lift.

I don't suppose too many recumbent riders use it though!

Just looks like a flat pivoting object that you put your weight on. Watch
it as the first guy reaches the top of the hill and takes his foot off.

I'd imagine it'd be better if it was higher off the ground, though - to save
leaning and stretching so much.

An SPD-compatible one would be interesting! :-)

Yeah ... a new new class of "failure to unclip" accidents await! grins

Looks fairly hazardous to me -- especially in the modern litigious society.
I mean do you see any council, with its mad creations of psycle paths,
adding it as a farcility -- apart from all the local yoofs imitating
Nureyev in free fall. it wouldn't survive the week --- or even day 2!

I can think of a few hills in Sheffield that would benefit from one of
those! :-)

You'd need to set the cost relatively low. I can imagine a lot of people
powering up that hill jeering at those that "have" to use the lift.

I would guess in an area where lots of people cycle as normal transport
it would get some use but in places like the UK those who actually cycle
would probably not balk at cycling up the hill
