Disk brakes
I bought a new bike with disk brakes on the front.. but they small disk was
not straight and I had to take it back. I've been told by someone that these cause a lot of problems, and by another person that they're ok. I don't need any fancy brakes for riding around town. Should I try to get the bike shop to give me a bike with normal brakes? Thanks |

They are better for stopping in wet weather. I have over 3200 miles on mine with no problems at all. Funny, with me, it's the rear (and pretty often, and usually something to worry about). Ohhhh.... brakes! Never mind. Mark Hickey Habanero Cycles http://www.habcycles.com Home of the $795 ti frame |

Take the wheel off and run a piece of clean rag between the pads and wipe the disk over. Worst case it can be sand behind the pads. Carefully pop them out and more clean rag. For cars they have a goo that goes on the back of the pads to exclude dust but bike should never get that bad. Over 10,000 km on hydraulic Shimano 525 disks and not a problem. Still on original pads. I'm lucky to get 1500 (urban) km out of a set of Hopes (though the Hopes on the trike are still OK after 7000). -- Dave Larrington - http://www.legslarry.beerdrinkers.co.uk/ If you are choking on an ice cube, simply pour a jug of boiling water down your throat and presto! I bought a boxed bike with disks recently. The rotors were warped by a
mm. I adjusted them with a straight edge and a little encouragement from the heel of my hand. No big deal. I love them on my town bike as once set up, they're fantastic and reliable, especially when it rains. Sure, rim brakes are fine too, but sounds like you just need the rotor straightened--a five minute job. |

Thanks for the tip.
Its not the most expensive bike, a Raleigh, middle cost, and one guy in the shop said he had many people complaining about them. But maybe he was wrong... thanks "landotter" wrote in message oups.com... I bought a boxed bike with disks recently. The rotors were warped by a mm. My c200 although heavy, has given me no 'real' problems in 3200 miles. Ken -- New cycling jersey: $49 new cycling shorts: $39 Not being a slave to the petrol pump: priceless. |
